Check that the throttle is not hitting the air filter base also. I had this to happen and it was a stupid little thing but it made the linkage stick and you didn't notice it with the breather off. ...

Retorque the water pump, intake bolt, and timing...
Retorque the water pump, intake bolt, and timing bolts. The bolts loosen up through heat cycles. I have had small leaks like this and a retorque has taken care of them.

I'm not a chevy guy but the LS series of engine is a much better design than the Ford mod. In my opinion the ford mod motor was a Turd in 1996 and is a Turd in 2008,

Looks like basic 5.0 gt stuff which is good reliable stuff. Your missing the Computer, Mass air flow sensor, and the thick film distributor. Oh do you have the harness. Good luck
