Description: The FIRST Superformance Cobra imported to the USA

Chassis number COB023 was one of 23 prototype cars built by Jimmy Price prior to starting production. Eight of the prototypes are known to survive. COB023 was the first car sent to the United States in 1992, imported by the first Superformance dealer...Charlie Ponstein in New Orleans. COB023 is the ONLY Superformance prototype car in the USA.

The car that named the brand

COB023 was imported as a HI-Tech car named after the South African factory, but that name was already used by a Cobra builder in the USA. A new name was needed, so Jimmy decided on Superformance. COB023 represents the start of the brand that was since licensed by Shelby and has delivered over 3000 cars.

Not an ordinary Superformance

COB023 is a roadster model with under-car exhaust. No snake bites for your passenger's legs! The beautiful lines of the car can be fully appreciated without the distraction of side pipes and roll bars. Because this car holds an important place in Superformance history, it has been kept in excellent original condition. Other than some new engine parts, the car is as it came from Hi-Tech in 1992. The prototype cars were a test bed for production, so several different schemes were tried. The body is the same high-quality glass as production models. The frame is square tube like the production cars, but the rear end is a straight axle/drum brake unit from a S.A. Ford. The front suspension uses the same linkage as production with ATE calipers and Spax coil-over shocks on all four corners. The brakes are power-assisted, with a vacuum reservoir added to improve slow-speed performance. The wheels are 5-bolt chrome steel with a black-fiberglass Halibrand insert secured by imitation knock offs. The gauge cluster is VDO and the steering column is Ford Sierra. Brake and signal lights are Austin Healey. There is a full top, side curtains, and tonneau cover. The engine is 289 Ford 8A104001 built by Bob Breaux with hydraulic lifters, performance cam, MSD ignition, Edelbrock intake manifold and air cleaner, and 650 Holley carb. Transmission is T-5 Ford.

The driving experience

A small-block Cobra was Shelby's favorite for good reason. It is the perfect blend of power and handling. Forget negatives you may have heard about straight-axle Cobras. This car was designed right. In spirited driving around the twists, turns, ups and downs of my favorite New Hampshire back roads, it has never disappointed. Powerful enough to turn heads when you press the loud pedal, but a comfortable cruiser as well, COB023 puts a grin on your face every time.

A rare opportunity

This car's unique role in Superformance history makes it very special. There are other nice Superformance cars available, but COB023 will always be the one car that started the Superformance phenomenon in North America and made all those others possible.
