Starter Recommendation
I have noticed recently that the cobra has been hard to start. Long delays between turning the key and the actual cranking of the motor. Almost like a bad battery, had the battery checked and it is good. Red top Optima
The battery is brand new and I know that is not the issue. So I am considering replacing the starter. The starter that is there is huge, weighs a ton, and looks like it is a 100 years old. (exaggerting a little). I am thinking of just replacing it and wanted to see what people were using. Recommendations and just as important any to stay away from. Little insight on the motor. It is a 501 (429 block), 10.5:1 commpression, only about 1000 miles. Thanks Mike |
I've had really good luck my cheap $48 ebay starter for my 460: http://stores.ebay.com/DB-Electrical...&submit=Search
I bot it in Sept '08 and its been running strong since! |
Check the relay before you dump money on a starter.

Also what gauge wire are you running from your positive side of your battery. I have a 0/1 gauge from my battery that is located in the trunk..Strong like bull on all starts..Also have a remote solenoid so no hot starting issue..You have to find the weak link in the chain and most likely it is not the starter..

mjmacqua,
I've tried several starters, all the way from the stock '90 or so Ford truck starter to different kinds of geared down ones. The best is the stock Ford starter. It's also pretty compact. BTW most of my starter problems came from a faulty neutral start switch. Tom |
The powermaster starter is very dependable,I've installed about 20 and never had any problems. The wiring on the silinoid needs to be changed but other then that it's the way to go.

Use a gear drive mini starter, mine starts works great with deep cycle battery.
