degrees advance distributor

Hi everybody, my name is Norberto and i am 32 years old. I write from Italy.
Last year I bought a Cobra motor 351w stroked 393. I wanted to know how many degrees I have to give the distributor? The engine mounts Keith Black piston, camshaft Trick Flow and carburetor Demon.
Thanks in advance to all

Welcome. Try 36-38 degrees total. The accurate way to determine this is on a dyno, or at the drag strip.

A lot depends on the engine configuration, especially the compression. If it's a sedate and mild engine, with 9:1 compression, 36-38* may work well. If your compression is higher, set max a lot lower.

My engine has a lot of compression. I made more power on the dyno by dropping the timing down to 34* max, all in by 3,000 rpm's. I gained a little more mid range power by adding some timing in the mid range.

BTW, I lived in Italy for a couple of years back in the late 80's. I look back on that as some of the best times of my life. You have a beautifull country.

The numbers given above are for total timing (base plus total mechanical advance). It sounds like you are looking for base timing and I would start around 12 to 14 degrees, then fine tune it once you get the engine running.

thaks a lot everybody. in these i will can try, but why when I return in off key position the car tries to rekindle or crackles?

Thanks a lot for your answer. so I have to take to fix the engine at 3000 rpm's and the deposit must be equal to 34°? is this what you tell me to try?

Where do ypu live when you staied in Italy? Italy is good but US is very good!!

gsharapa 09-25-2011 06:45 AM

You are correct............the total of initial advance (where it is set at idle) plus what advance in the distributor would equal the total advance above 3,000 rpm or where ever it stops advancing. I ran most of my small block at 34 to 36. If you don't have a dyno run the engine up until it stops advancing and then set it at 34 total and see how it idles. Then you could move it up a bit and try that...

ok. Have I connect the distributor vacuum at the base of the carburetor or not? what is it for?
Regards

Yes, that's a good place to start. If the engine is trying to restart after you shut it down, that's usually caused by too much base timing, or the idle is set too high.

I was stationed in Comiso, Sicily, for two years. I just loved it there. If I had time and money, I'd take a trip back there.

i try to put engine 3000rpm and 34°. i make this with tube connect from the carburator to the vacum. Is correct?

grybrd123 09-26-2011 10:26 AM

Vacuum advance

Hi:

What kind of distributor do you have?
Is it both mechanical and vacuum advance?
If it is both, you must disconnect and plug the vacuum line to the carburetor to set the timing properly. After you have set the mechanical advance, you can connect the vacuum advance.

Disconnect the vacum line at the carb and plug it(vacum line), set your timing at 34 degrees at 3000 rpms. lock the distributor down and re-connect the vacum line and see how it idles/runs...............adjust 2 degrees +/- from there.....don't worry about the intial timing, let it fall where it may......

Also, make sure the engine is fully warmed up before doing this, take it for a short drive, that way everything is fully up to operating temps......

After setting your timing you will most likely have to adjust your idle rpms to your desired rpm, that is normal........
