Supercharged 460

How much compression/boost can I use on a supercharged 460? I am considering a supercharger for a 9.3:1 460, but I don't know if the compression is too high for a fairly mild supercharger. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Bran

P.S. Don't tell my wife that I am thinking about more power already, I haven't started the engine for the first time yet.;)

Bran, The trend to street supercharging right now is to run about a 9 to 1 compression ratio for for instant throttle response and to use the supercharger as a sort of high end passing gear. This combo works VERY WELL on 450 cu/in or more motors and light cars. Remenber, 7 lbs of boost will increase your volumetric effiicency by 40%. So a 460 X 140% nets a 644 cu/in motor with a dynamic compression of about 12 to 1. Boosts around 7 to 11 lbs increases dynamic compressions to the point were serious ignition retard systems are required. Past 11 lbs maybe you need to lower your compression a notch or two. My engine has a 9 to 1 compression ratio, and it's by design.
What you most likely don't know though is that there is not any nice and neat supercharger kits out there for these big motors. This means you will have to fabracate brackets etc. and this also leads to higher $$$$$$$$ spent.
If you have the money and the time I say, research it , then-- GO FOR IT !

The 385 series motors can run more compression than the FE's without detonation problems--mine runs 11.5 to one on 97 octane pump gas without problems--just NO cheap gas! This being the case, you could probably get away with 9.75 or even 10 to one static compression w/ a blower. Would make an awesome combination, if you have the gas available. Even without it, a can or two of Super 104 octane boost per fill up wouldn't break the bank, as little as these cars are driven...:3DSMILE:

SUPERCHARGING?

Bran3b, take a look at my gallery for some ideas. It was very VERY hard to fabricate everything to fit under the hood!
Any other questions feel free to ask. If I could sum it up "IT WAS A 8I+CH BUT DAMN WELL WORTH IT)! :3DSMILE:

Hi
I'm running 6.8 to 1 compression on a 588 stroker, anything higher and you have to under drive the blower so much it doesn't put any boost until top r.p.m.

you guys are nuts. :)

Vortech Mounts...

I'm designing vortech mounts for the 385 series that mount the supercharger front and center on the engine where the water pump used to be. Instead of a mechanical water pump, you use one of the new mezeire electrics. The brackets use a reverse rotation V1, V2, or V7 series blower (I'm using the V7-JT), and are designed for 55mm cog drive, though you could use serpentine and adjust things if desired.

The blower discharge can be routed to a front mount intercooler or simply wrapped around to an intake manifold any way you like. I'm using a dominator style carb intake converted to EFI, with a custom elbow/hat that uses an oval throttle body.

In any event, this will be an easy fit in most cobras running 385 series motors...if you're interested, I'll provide more info as soon as I get the plate back from the waterjet shop in a few weeks.

With a V7-JT, you should be able to make about 1000-1100hp. We'll see.

can i get some info to purchase a 460 mount for a v1/v2 spercharger?

ByronRACE 01-05-2012 03:39 PM

Haven't seen one yet.

I still haven't seen a Vortech mount for a 460 that would work in a Cobra application. Mine is custom; I designed it and had the plates fabricated at a waterjet shop.

Project Ludicrous Speed for pics

Also, mine is a V7-JT and reverse rotation.
