starter
Sorry for all the questions guys but I need more help. I'm running a 460 with a tremec 5 speed with a McLeod bell housing, I have a 176 tooth flywheel, I would like to run a high torque starter but can't seem to get a clear answer on which starter will work. I called summit they said this is the starter you need and I said OK if it for a 176 tooth flywheel and then they say idk. Thanks for any help.

A factory high-torque gear reduction starter was used on '92-'96 E-series w/460; and 92-97 F-series w/ 460. While most of these were for automatics, they will work on manuals as well. Only difference is the nose; the manual trans starters had a slightly shorter nose cone. Added plus is the late model case is quite a bit smaller and the unit lighter. Worked like a champ in my old car. If your parts house is too high, check these guys:
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/DB-Electrical-SFD0030-Starter-Mercury/dp/B00KGIEDZY"]Amazon.com: DB Electrical SFD0030 Mini Starter (Ford Truck Van Mercury 460 engine 3226): Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ntgzM2XZL.@@AMEPARAM@@51ntgzM2XZL[/ame] I bought one from them and it was quite good in performance & price. You should also run a ground from a starter bolt to frame to get max performance. Good luck!! |
blueblood,
Kinda x^2 on the DB Electrical unit - with the caveat that the first one they sent was defective. Their response was good, though, and the next one works fine on my 521. Tom |
You might also consider a heat shield and remote solenoid. The mini starter on my 460 has worked flawlessly since the 90's.

I have a similar unit on my 460. Manual. It seems very noisy when cranking. (Harsh gear noise). I am using a quick time housing. Other than the noise it seems to work well. Any thoughts or is this normal? ?
Sorry to hijack. Sinkers. |
