428 cobra jet Vs. 460

I wanted to find out what you guy's thought. I know a guy selling a 428 cobra jet I think he said 1968 or so. If I bought it I would have to spend about $4000 to rebuild it on top of what he sells it to me for. He hasn't said a price but I think hes going to say around $3000. It runs ok now It have never been rebuilt. Or I was thinking about going with a 460. I don't plan on racing I just want to take my car out a have a good time driving. I am on a bit of a budget so what would be the better way to go thanks for the help

Hi Travis,

A 460 certainly could be bought and built up for less money and produce more power than the 428.

Another question you might consider is the kit you are going to use: can it accommodate a 460? The 460 is physically larger.

Regards,

Tom

From everything I have read......

The maintanence costs with a rebuilt 428 can really bite you later on (cobra pun) You can get a Ford factory 460 motor in the lower horsepower ranges for not too much. Check out the engine options here. Look under parts search, then scroll the page down and select: ....engine assemblies:

I like the idea of as original as possible a motor in an authentic looking replica, but the greater potential costs and trouble for the FE motors (especially the 427 and 428) steers me away.
If the motor you have in mind is inexpensive and running excellently, it might be a good value. Be sure if this is your plan, to have compression tests, including bleed down tests, done prior to purchase.
My West Coast is getting the monster 514 CI 600 horse motor. It is actually a bit overpowered :3DSMILE:
