460-Toploader

Picked up a 28 spline toploader from an FE Mustang. Want to put it behind my 460. I can't remember if there is something that conflicks on the input side or not. Can anybody shed some light on this combination? Also want to use hydraulic clutch. Who makes the right scattersheild?

Hi Gman,

Looks like you are planning to run the same combination as me.

I currently run a 460 BBF mated to a toploader using a 400 ford bellhousing. Had to have a 2mm spacer plate laser cut between the bellhousing and motor. Also don't forget to put a bearing on the end of the input shaft of the toploader, should fit snug inside the end of the 460 crank. Besides that run 11 inch centre force clutch or similar and a matched steel flywheel.

I am currently using a hydralic slave cylinder conected to the clutch fork, to do the changing as my car is right hand drive. If I did it again I would change to hydraulic release bearing.

Hope this helps.

All the best

:)

460 Jules,
Thanks for the input. I thought the hang up was the input shaft length but I couldn't remember for sure. Thanks again.

460 Jules, you might get by with the 28-spline, but if you ever hook up your rear tires, you're gonna twist that puppies nose or tail...lotsa torque on your 429/460, but not much weight to push around. Good luck

It is POSSIBLE that McLeod has their new bellhousing for Ford BBs ready to go.
