460 lifter bore angle dimension
Gentlemen,
I am currently having a problem keeping cams in my 460. This is a newly rebuilt motor that is going through a proper break in but is still wiping out cams (hydraulic). I need to check the angle of the lifter bore and there locations before I move forward. I need help finding this data. Thanks Tom :CRY: |

What fails? Are the cam lobes being eaten? Does the cam push the water pump into the radiator :LOL: Are these flat lifters or roller? New lifters or used? A little more description would help. Regards, Tom |

This was a Comp Cam 280 Hydraulic flat tappet cam. No it did not Push from its installed location. The cam lobes and bottom of lifter look like they were put on a grinder. |

Here's a place to start. Crane Cams failure tech page Note the "Click for closeup" places - see if one of them matches the appearance of your dead cam & lifters. Sorry it isn't more specific. Let us know if it helps any :CRY: Regards, Tom PS: I've had cam failure too so I know what's involved - mine was a defective Ford crate motor distributor that ate the gear off the cam... PPS: Also, as to the lifter bore angle, the site says "or the angle of the lifter bore is not 90 degrees to the centerline of the cam" - the inference is that 90 degrees is the correct angle. |
Have you used or installed a cam thrust plate? The problem you described may be a cam "walking" problem. I believe this is also ties to (at least in part) to the cam/distrib. wear problem. The best one I have found is at :
