Congrats Tom..

Your system looks identical to the way mine will, when the throttle body is installed. As you know, I am shaking down and breaking her in with a Demon 850 carb, for the first 3,000 miles or so. I have had numerous small bugs such as the breather oil dribbles, oil coming out of the dipstick under acceleration, (have a new double O ring dipstick/tube unit coming from Summit, wrapped a small cotton rag bandage on there for now, to keep the tiny oil spray off the headers, it actually works, lol ) dealing with a few other oddities such as making my soft top-side curtains fit properly under freeway speed (properly applied velcro) and the NASCAR baffles , which are totally installed and are actually not too loud at all.. classy deep rumble, but not true "cop callers" any more :3DSMILE:

I cannot wait to also have a smooth EFI system working..

Tom Wells 03-06-2003 09:38 AM

Hey BiB,

Thanks! :D If you need the gory details, holler! Be aware mine would not start until I selected "square wave"/Chev on the hardware screen, different from what Holley told me

I just sold my Demon and will put the Edelbrock Performer RPM 360 manifold up for sale shortly.

Question: Why is your crankcase pressurized?

My engine has a PCV in one valve cover feeding the base of the throttle body, and a breather on the opposite valve cover to act as an intake. The pic titled "Holley MPFI - passenger side" shows this pretty clearly. No oil leakage problems.

Just curious,

Tom

Mr.Fixit 03-06-2003 10:00 AM

sounds like BiB has a poor piston ring seal.

Back in Black 03-06-2003 01:38 PM

Hmmm

Well, the motor has only about 200 miles so far, so could that be part of the problem?

I did add a nice billet PCV system, which helped tremendously.. no leakage around the grommets up on the valve covers any more. Just a teeny bit out of the top of the dipstick fitting. the tiny bit gets on the headers, hence the "bandage".. it does seem to be a lot worse dribble if I step on it at all.

I figured the fact that the motor is brand new might be the cause of the slight pressure condition.. rings not seated yet..?
Seems like it would not take much since it is a 514.. oil pressure is 75 cold, 50 hot.

What I have planned is a nice road trip (100 to 200miles) as soon as I get the new dipstick, and the weather co-operates. Hopefully that should help seat the rings ?

Nice Job!

She's a beauty, Tom. I opted for the carburetor, but who knows in the future. Hope to have it on the road this summer and determine what my next upgrade will be. What will yours be?

Chuck

Tom Wells 03-06-2003 07:53 PM

Hi Chuck,

Thanks!

No more upgrades for now. I hope I can just drive the wheels off of it for the rest of the year

Cruising, some driving school(s) at Summit Point or maybe VIR and the Fling - 450 miles each way.

I hope it'll get me there AND back this year :JEKYLHYDE

Regards,

Tom

Tom,
It is still so beautiiifull!
Tickeled you are coming back. I promise we will give you the chance to properly show it off! :)
DV...I and II were just practice!

I think I said it before, but I will repeat.. your paint looks great. It is very similar to an alternate I considered (The babe veto'ed titanium, lol) great car, and congrats on your pioneering the EFI stuff for the 460 block.. (you were the test subject, that's kinda like a glorified lab rat, but the payoff is better :3DSMILE: )

Problem solved

The new dipstick from Summit fixed the oil dribble problem.. The old tube (supplied with the 514 crate motor) leaked at the top and bottom. The new one has AN type fitting at the bottom, with 2 "O" rings, and the billet dipstick has a small diameter hole for the stick, with a nice o ring.. drove her 25 miles yesterday, and not one drop. The stick seems very solid and it is unlikely to ever wiggle out.

Summit part number LOK-ED-5011 ( $41.95 )

EFI for 460

I have a 460 under remodel (will be a 532 when all complete). Engine all put together...I am using TWM Induction 58mm throttle bodies (8 stacker) and an Electromotive EFI controller.

EFI unit has been installed. TWM unit including intake were chromed and reassembled at TWM (THANKS GARRY!!!)....I get reassembled unit tomorrow from TWM and will take to my builder. We are installing dual Bosch fuel pumps and hardlining all piping to engine compartment. This will be finished by next week. Then motor should go into car and we are ready to wire this thing up....

Electromotive unit uses direct-fire coils so no distributor. MSD makes a plug unit to fit into distributor hole. We have mounted crank trigger to new harmonic balancer and will be ready to wire everything in about 1-2 weeks.

Then look out!!!!

Wow!

That is VERY cool looking. How do you fit it all under the hood of a West Coast? Is the total assembly no taller than your old carbureted setup? How do you filter the air into the Weber-style stacks? What intake manifold did TWM use?

Really neat!

Chuck

Back in Black 04-08-2003 02:50 PM

Awesome !

My question is.. what about air filtration? Do you have some nifty screen type filters to pop in the stacks?

Keep us posted as to how it runs. Youyr setup is what I eventually want.. maybe later, with my second motor ?

Mohuska 04-08-2003 06:45 PM

There are three ways to achieve air filtration on these units:

1. There is a complete box that fits over entire assembly for long cruises..so as not to get dirt in motor. This unit has two filter banks that fit over stacks, but fit into one assembly...this will fit under the hood of the West Coast

2. There are short K&N Filter units with a gasket clamp which fit over the velocity stack and cinch down.

3. The nice look which I will use for short trips and shows is a "tea strainer" type of filter that has a molded rubber top (sort of like the top on a canning jar..minus the center lid).... This allows a pair of mesh grates with a disk of filter material sandwiched between to filter.....works great!!!

By the Way

Here is my new paint job....The old one was a red-orange with red-orange interior (faded by sun).....New paint looks like this....

Awesome!

It looks like one of the colors I considered. First class eye grabber! ;)
