Piston Choice
Need some help. I'm getting ready to send things out to get balanced and I can't make up my mind on which pistons to use. I have a set of Keith Black flat tops and a set of trw L2404 dished pistons. I have a C9VE block, Dove heads,Torker II intake, and comp cams hydraulic w/ 230dur 530 lift. If I fiqured right the KB's put the compression over 11. This will be street driven an must make the 3 hr ride to the fling. A'm I going to regret the higher comp? Thanks Gman

For street use, 11 to 1 is over the top, go for lower comp. With 11 to 1 you will wind up retarding the timing to less than optimum coniditions for street use. In turn you will loose the advantage of high comp you started with! And/or will be carrying gas additive around in the trunk and in constant look out for "high octane" stations. That will get old in a hurry on long trips, "mixing" the gas every time you stop.

I have sucessfully done 11:1 street motors than ran on 92 octane. The efficiency of the combustion chamber comes into play a lot as the line is being pushed a bit, aluminum heads are a must. Also they run closer to 11:1 air:fuel not the 13.5:1 that so many people think is always the optimum. But small block ford, single holley, over 500 ft/lbs from 2500 rpm up and over 500 hp as well. Measured at the flywheel, no correction factors.

Stepped down to 10:1 compression , will see how it goes soon, still working like crazy to get done for DVSF. Thanks for the replies, Gman

The clock is ticking gman. 43 days, 14 hours, 27 minutes, 20 seconds as i post this. That clock is driving me insane. Time to push hard on the body to get it ready for paint.

gman,
I think you made the wise move to lower the compression to 10:1.....The streetability of the motor will be much more friendly to you. If you were just looking for HP...there are plenty of other ways to get extra HP.... I too have just built a motor (nearly finished).......am going with 10:1 in a 521ci motor with aggressive cam and 8 stacker TWM 58mm throttle bodies EFI..... I agree with Mr. Fixit...I hope you are running aluminum heads...MUUUCH better!!! my 2c |
