It was good to chew the fat regarding our Cobras today. Especially when we share the same platform and problems. Looks like I need to look into a better shroud for my radiator as well. See you on Saturday in the Snake Pit.

My 460 ran hot as well. I did the usual....cap pressure, bleeding. water wetter...etc with little success. I finally got rid of the march pully set and went with a much smaller alternater and pump pully. Also changed to a high flow pump that wont cavitate, added the original style pusher fans up front, and a 160 thermostat. Now I run 175-190 degrees no matter what or where I am. It sure made life alot easier, and spewing water everytime I stopped is a thing of the past. Also check timing and fuel...lean makes em run hot. I also wrapped the headers, and that helped too........John

Got a part number for that Lincoln shroud? I'd like to pursue something similar.

Any more detailed specs on your sprint car puller fan? Another option to consider.

Mine's not on the road yet, but it would be nice to solve a problem before I experience it!

I just reread your post. The oil issue shouldn't be an issue. A number of major manufacturer's use systhetics right from the factory. Mercedes, Corvette, and others. My wife's ML 320 came with Mobil 1 and the first oil change wasn't due until 10,000 miles or one year, which ever came first. (The times, they are a changin') I personally have used Mobil 1 for years with no adverse results. I've also used "Prolong" (additive) which quieted things down some but it's getting real hard to get in my area. As far as helping an engine run cooler, logically that seems ok but I really haven't experienced that.

Sorry guys, just saw your request. I don't have a PN#, it was a wrecking yard find. I read somewhere that Lincoln MarkVIII's and Turbocoop's used a desirable fan. I'm not even sure if that's what I have. I found it in the trunk of a wrecked car, it had lots of blades and when I put 12 volts to it it put out alot of air. The shroud didn't fit without major mods. What's most important is having a good fan and even more important a shroud that covers the entire surface area of the radiator so that air is pulled through all the fins, not just the ones in front of the fan, like the stock WC setup. To sum it up, a 2500 plus CFM puller fan and a full shroud did the trick for me. Bill

2 things that really helped to knock down the heat issues in my 460 FFR. #1 was to add an oil cooler. Dramatic change! #2 was, after 3500 miles, switched to Mobil 1 oil. I still get the temp gauge to climb if I'm stuck in more than 10 minutes of traffic, but it doesn't overheat, and I have a wimpy Spal fax with no shroud installed. This is my project for the winter, installing a better fan with home-made, if necessary, shroud.

I had terrible heating problems with my 460. I changed water pump pully diameters, changed to a high flow pump, 160 degree thermostat. and a puller fan also factory style twin pushers that I can turn on in traffic. I run a 3 core aluminum rad, and now it runs about 190, and rarely goes above 210. You know you can have too much radiator if you think of the theory of water and air movement. It's possible to have tubes so far from the air flow so to speak that you never really transfer the heat from the rows closest to the engine. So I'm not sure that all these 7 core rads are the answer, otherwise why would we all not go to something a foot thick and be done with it. It is frustrating sometimes, and believe me I had my problems, but just sit down and think about what you have and eliminate the obvious first...good luck.
