460ci, 535hp Ford Racing Crate - Dyno??
Anyone out there put there Ford Racing 460ci/535hp engine on a chassis dyno? I Just got mine put into a brand new SPF and was a little dissappointed with the results. I haven't take delivery of the car yet, and I have the engine builder and Ford Racing working on the figures as we speak.
The only change made to the engine was an 850 Demon Carb, and a MSD 6al ignition system. I've been told an independant rear suspension eats up HP on the chassis dyno, is this true? Rear wheel HP: 392 Rear Wheel Torque: 419 I was expecting around 415hp to 430hp Torque seems to be inline... I was talked out of the 514/600hp, now I wish I would have done it. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks |
Spoony;
Your #'s come out to a 27% loss to the rear wheels from the advertised hp #'s. I have talked to some that say a 25% loss in "normal" thru an IRS rear end,so your #'s are pretty much in line. A little tweaking of the motor should or could get you some more hp,maybe 25 to 35 hp depending on the timing and carb setting.... Did they make any adjustments to your motor (timing/jetting),if not, I would have it checked again maybe after you take delivery and see exactly how it's performing.. I believe you will like the combo you have a little more than the 514 combo, depending on what you plan to do with the car. I have talked to a few that have the 514 combo and they say it is not real "street" friendly and have talked to a couple of guys with the 460 combo that just absolutely love it. You should have all the power you need for anything except all out racing, then you probably would still have enough for that also... David |
Dragon
:D I have a 514 stroker that dynoed at 600HP and 674 ft lbs of torque. Used Eldebrock performer intake and performer heads 60669. Holley carb 850. MSD al6 Well behaved (idles nice) and runs cool. When you let the dragon out of the cage, it is scary.

In my heavier West Coast
The 514 is just barely enough. (for me) It is quite a boost when you step into the power band tho :3DSMILE: :MECOOL:
It does run hot (210 + oil temp, 190+ water) |
It is nice that the "people" warn you of the risk of the 514c.i. engine (600+ horsepower), however it is not fair that these people make the decision for you that 600+ horsepower is "too much". I had people begging me into not getting my custom built 520 c.i. engine in my Superformance Cobra, it was the best running/dependable engine I have ever had. Remember, there is no such thing as too much power.
P.S. The 520c.i. engine still wasn't enough power for me... |
David thanks for the input it makes me feel a little better, I test drove a SPF 460/535 before I ordered mine and it was exactly what I was looking for. I'm not going to race this car, I'm doing a few other things, like 17" chrome teamIII wheels and a complete $4000.00 Alpine stereo system. I own a drag car and have been racing it for a while and understand there are two very important things to fast cars....knowing how to drive them....hooking them up. So I do believe there is such a thing as to much power. I run a '63 Impala wagon with 912hp.... and beat guys with more power and better setup's all the time. When we started we dyno'd @ 1203hp....We run .4 faster with the current set-up.
Thanks for the input |
Spoony, If you plan on racing the car you have some considerations. Otherwise, you have all you will ever need on the street. You can break the tires loose at most any time in the first 3 gears. Your exhaust sound is better than most cars on the street. Plus, it is driveable. I have a SPF with this engine. Oil and water temps are fine. This engine will probably live a little longer than the stroker.
We always want more, but why, if you can't use it. Lynn |
The numbers semm about right for IRS...all those u-joints eat up some power! I think with some fine tuning and as the motor breaks in, you'll get a bit higher though!

Gotta compare apples to apples !!!!
Spoony,
You say you are disappointed with your hp numbers. I suggest you compare apples to apples. That is, look at chassis dyno results of other SIMILAR cars (Superformance) with the SAME crate engine (460). Ask around, maybe you can get this info from other SPF owners, your chassis dyno shop, etc. If so, you can compare your numbers with the other guys. Maybe your numbers are in line with theirs. Until you do this, you will be spinning your wheels and never know what's right. Some people have said 28%-30% hp loss from flywheel to rear wheels is about right. I dunno. I've heard (through Club Cobra and other sources) that the range is more like 15%-20%. Remember that hp loss is due to frictional losses that are converted to heat. So, 30% seems like a lot to me. But if that's a good number, I'm gonna be thinking long and hard before choosing my new engine. How's 700 HP sound ???? Y'all take it easy now, Brett:3DSMILE: :3DSMILE: |
