,,so whats wrong with a stick shift anyway? Which is prefered by 90% of Cobra owners.

Ernie - Wears clutches out faster on Fords. O.K. for most G.M's and Chryslers.
Woops, thought you was talking about B&M's trick shift too.
As for sticks versus automatics you know how to start it don't you? Personal preference tempered by the reqirements of what you are trying to do. ( re: your question. ) That and the fact that I'm lazy too.

cobrashoch, if a C6 takes 100 hp, then a 98 horsepoewr car could not even get the tailshaft to move at WOT. Also, cars switching from C6 to 4 speed don't pick up 10 mph in the quarter.

Uh oh,

I get to use my favorite mantra:

If it matters what gear you're in, the engine's too small.

Lentechs are awesome

Here is a link you must check out if you are seriously considering an automatic. They are considered one of the tops in the field of AOD's and EAOD's

Kris - Sorry, it does'nt work that way. Using that logic no transmission of any type, stick included would not work if you matched its power requirments. What I'm talking about here is the trannys loss'es it takes to make a car accelerate. You are correct that a 10 horse electric motor can drive almost all automotive trannys at a constant speed. What you are talking about is drive through efficiency. That efficiency is the heat producer in trannys BTW. Not the kicking around stuff we all do to these hot rods. Another way to look at the heat issue is to think of a tranny as a giant heat sink in the middle of your car. That more than anything else is why factorys switched to aluminum cases over the earlier cheaper cast iron cases on automatics. Aluminum gives up heat better you know.

Hi,
A stock C-6 takes 60 HP, a blueprinted one 40.
An AOD takes 40 HP.
A manual trans takes 25 HP.

I would rather have a heavy duty trans than a "weak" link in my
drivetrain.
The car with 460 HP won't care if it's 1 or 2 tenths slower in the 1/4 , but the owner will care when he goes through 3 transmissions by not building his car for the torque capabilities of his engine.
And by the way NOBODY can let their clutch out ,gas it, shift to 2nd, faster than a prepared automatic !
Perry.

With a prepared manual, you don't need to use the clutch between gears.

Now were talking!! I think the answer is going to be to get the car finished with the tranny I've got at present, see how it performs, and in the meantime I need to calculate the distances from using a toploader/tremec/B/H, and ensure the bracketry will accommodate all options to ease the changeover in the future, on the question of cooling, the heat factor does worry me slightly, there is a vast range of Tranny coolers available out there, what do others use ie make/capacity/setup, I'd be interested to know, thanks again for all your inputs. Perry - Re power lost; Which stock C6? Made several years and in many carnates you know. Same for the others. What do you mean by blueprinting? And by who. Very subjective you know.
I think your numbers are a bit low but thats o.k. by me.
As is Linetechs advertised high power handling capasitys on what I call the "Art Carr" AOD special. Their power handling capacity has gone up pretty substantially from just a year ago. Yet I see no change in componentry listed. As Spock would say,,, interesting! Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Dave- Re; trans coolers. This is one area where bigger is better. Looking at a old Jegs cat. there or several w/fans I would consider, but I would have to see anything I would buy first.
More than anything else you are limited to the size of your cowl opening unless you mount it higher on the radiator. Strange as it may seem, I am using a Mopar kit unit that they sell for full size van conversons. Works for me!

I'll have a look at some different units, thanks Ron. Dave
