Rev Limiter?
I have a " mis-fire" at 5800 rpm on a 514. I bought the Cobra with 2200mi and now has 3700. I have some unburnt fuel(I think) at idle (stop signs and stop lights) that I blow out with a Rev but I'm getting tired of that...any suggestions?
The next problem is the 5800 mis-fire. How do I know if this is a rev limiter (the seller never said anything) or another problem. Maybe someone could explain how the rev limiter works and how do I find out if one is on this car....this car runs real strong otherwise. (850 holly, dualpln edel) Thanks |
Karl,
I only know about my MSD box, it has a plug in chip with a rev setting stamped on it ( 6000 ). You can just plug in a chip with a different setting more or less then you have now but, you may blow the motor. You should be moving pretty good @ 5800 rpm? May be your chip is off a little. |
Some are a soft touch style and you set them by grounding a lead, usually with a switch, at half the rpm you want the limiter set to. Does it go beyond 5800 rpm? If so it probably isn't a limiter.

First of all what type of ignition box do you have? That will let us know if it has a rev limiter.
For the unburned fuel that sounds like your carb is too rich or the idle circuts need adjusting. It could also be improper float adjustment allowing raw fuel to dump into the intake. If you have a good multi-spark ignition box like a MSD, Mallory Hyfire etc that will help clear up your unburnt fuel once you get the carb adjusted properly. I added a Hyfire unit to my Unilight and it really cleared up the unburnt fuel and allowed the motor to go over 5500 rpm. Before the Hyfire the motor would miss at about 5500rpm and it burned your eyes pretty bad. |
Karl,
Trace the wires from your coil and dist and see if there is a "box" that is powering your ignition system. If you can't trace the wires post how many wires are going to your coil. Got any pictures? I just wired my MSD dist and 6AL and only have two wires on the coil as opposed to three without it (6AL). Some ignition boxes are mounted under the dash, firewall, or fenderwheel. flipper's right if it goes beyond 5800 its not a limiter. |
Are the lifters pumping up?
If you are by chance using solid core spark plug wires, the magnetic field they create can sometimes affect the rev limiter function of some of the ignition boxes too. Rick |

This is an interesting topic. I have been asking around a lot of places and no one can give me a good answer. I have a 351C with a mallory unilite distributor, promaster coil, and msd wires. The enginge will only rev to about 5300 and then it will sputter and won't rev any higher. On the suggestion of a mallory tech I upgraded the fuel line, but am still having the problem. What exactly is it that causes this to happen, and would simply adding a hyfire unit fix the problem?
