new to the 429

hello all. new here and have ????? first off I dont have a cobra. I have a 73 mustang. I have decide to go big , having a 351 cleveland since I bought it but it was not enough so a buddy sold a a 429 thunderjet and c6 trans for 500 bucks so I bought it ,yes it runs good. I have decided to tear it down and replace with new. My question is what have I started? Any way what all have you done to make this beast better? I plan on getting edelbrock total preformance package, heads, cam, manifold ,carb. is this a good start or should I get something better? My wife plans to drive it also so I really dont want it too hopped up:CRY: thanks. Dustin

You can drop that right in the car with easily available mounts. The package you are going to use will be a great addition for a powerful street engine. If you want to go big power there are lots of other options, but your choice should make a strong package. I would look into some nice headers as well. Besides the usual vendors you might look into Sanderson headers. They make a large variety of pipes for various cars and they are usually a little longer lasting and less 'tinny", it also makes them a little more pricey.

well today i hand cranked the motor to a compresson check and out of the #8 it squarted oil across the garage. so is one of my rings gone bad? also how can I tell if its a dove tail or what. It is a thunderjet model. Also if i decide to sell the exhaust and intake manifols how much should they go for? I plan to put them on ebay unless one of you guys want them also maybe the head too. Thanks

First of all, The edlebrock is not the way to go. Wieand has the Stealth 8012 that, lets just say is light years better than the edlebrock. Doule plain good from idle to 7200 RPM. Keep the heads, go with a holley 750 vacum or mechanical, nothin fancy. I used Crane Gold roller rockers and a 1.70 ratio (instead of a 1.73) just fit better. The roller rockers are pretty much standard so go with those or something simmilar. You could put a 460 crank and pistons, I think the rods are the same, more cubes. Make sure you know if it's internally or externally balanced. I think the thunderjet is internally. May have to use different pistons for todays gas and comp ratio. I reccomend an Iske cam because they are made from stronger material. watch out though for the tourque converter with the bigger cam.

im considering a stroker fit,so what do you think has the best bang for the buck? I have seen them in ebay for around 1300 for a 520 kit, just wondering hiw streetable are these kits and what do i have to do internally, such as clearnaces and oil passages and such. Alos with the c6 would a simple shift kit be strong enough or should I do more?
