Almost forgot! Edelbrock now has the Torker with EFI bungs already in: Edelbrock 50665 - Edelbrock Victor EFI Intake Manifolds - Overview - SummitRacing.com Don't pay any attention to the Victor label. It's actually a Torker II :LOL: As to scaring yourself, carb should be fine. EFI is for those of us who don't know how to tune one LOL My 557 powered 81 Zephyr wagon has a carb.... Seriously, EFI works for me for road racing. Seems to help prevent fuel starvation on turns/acceleration/braking. As soon as the wagon gets a roll bar I'll try the carb on a road race track just for grins! Tom PS: That picture is 27K miles ago. It's in need of some serious cleanup now, but I don't seem to be able to stop driving it long enough to do that. |
At first looked into a Cammer (wow big dollars) then Boss (another wow) then FE (was talked out of it) old technology.
Built a .030 over 460 blueprinted,balanced Aluminum heads, ported polished Lunati flat tappet,roller rockers Edlebrock Performer port matched Davinci 1000cfm Holley dbl pmp Malloy Unilite Aluminum flywheel 11" Diaphram clutch balanced with flywheel. 525hp enough torque to rotate the earth. Our car has Tremec TKO,Strange aluminum center section with 3:73 gear.Coil-overs all around,Chrome moly all adjustable suspension,scaled with 12" Wilwood Ultralites and dual masters.Car was setup to road race.For us it was big block or nothing,love the Wow factor when opening the hood for people. |
I'm always amazed that people always go crazy when they see a cammer in a Cobra. Generally these are the same people that condem those of us that when with a 460. Nobody seems to care about the weight if it's a cammer or boss motor.

If you are going after the "cobra market" as you say, then stick with the cobra footprint and use performance proven parts -
427 CID Aluminum block Aluminum heads Forged pistons Willey's Race 4bbl Basic motor, easy to maintain and tune, go like a bat out of hell, be honest to the 427 fender emblems. |
Ya know, I hear a lot of talk about the need for a lightweight engine or the BBF being too heavy, but these cars are tailhappy to begin with. One of my customers reported back a 50/50 balance with an iron headed 460. :confused:
I have toyed with the idea of doing a destroked long rod engine based on the 429 that would achive a true 427 cubic inches, but is anyone really going to be interested when it costs the same to build a 501-557 cubic inch engine and that looks exactly the same? |

I will never have anything but a FE in my cobra. I started out with a 428FE and now we're building a side oiler. Genesis block, 527 cubes, big mechanical roller cam, aluminum heads etc,..... Can't wait,.....to hear & feel this motor ! When you said it's still amazing that it sits in the shop, and you have total satisfaction feeling. Me too. ;) I have a bad physical health issue, and even when I feel really bad, I sit in the car and just make bad ass engine sounds. It always makes me feel better, at least mentally. :3DSMILE: |

If you want power the 460 stroked cant be beat, its not too pricey and the cubic inch these motors can go to is awesome.

Up until last year was seriously considering stroking the 460 into well over 500 cubes.Instead picked up a 580hp 406" small block Boss Hoss V8 motorcycle.Wow! you talk about accelleration G force.This winter putting together an all aluminum Donovan 427" NASCA SB2 top end small block Chev shooting for 800+hp, this same bike has a Progressive controlled Nos system as well.The Cobra is parked beside the bike lift table,just for inspiration.

Earlier in this thread someone was talking about weights, so here is some data based on actual results posted on BIG BLOCK FORD'S.
Factory iron blocks run from 205lbs (4.440 bore D0VE) up to 229lbs (4.36 bore D9TE-AB) The A460 (Ford Motorsports) block, un-machined is 302lbs but drops to 255lbs with a 4.625 bore. My new un-machined A-96 block (aluminum with billet caps and 2.750mains) comes in at 160lbs. I expect it to drop to about 130 lbs when bored to 4.600. I question the statement that a complete, all iron FE at 500lbs. I read on FORD FE.COM that a complete iron 390 comes in at 610lbs. An iron FE at 500lbs considering what the intake alone weighs that is hard to swallow.At one time I wanted to build an aluminum 460,still may someday.For now quite happy the way the iron block aluminum topend is working out.
