Rev limits?
I've purchased a used SPF with a 460 SVO engine. Aluminum super cobra heads, mid rise manifold, and pretty much stock from there. I know one of the previous owners (I'm the 3rd) ran it hard. We have evidence the first guy blew the clutch and bell housing up thinking he was a race car driver. I had a mechanic pull the oil pan chasing down an oil leak when we found 2 small dents in the oil pan, from the inside. (OK, give me a break. You can't find these things when test driving a used car) But everything looked fine inside the engine, and the car runs great. There is a "MSD 6AL" ignition box under the dash, with an insert tab that reads "7000". That's the rev limiter, correct?
I thought the limits for these 460's was around 5500 to 6000 rpm. What is everybody else doing? Thanks |
Rev Limits
My 460 is set up pretty much the same way and my 6AL box has a 6000 rpm chip in it. I wouldn't take it any higher than 6200 if it was me. Plenty for the street where I drive mine 99% of the time!:)

Yep, that's the rev limiter. The 460 will rev past 7K with no problem, but a 6K like greg has is safe. If you don't have any, I've seen MSD rev limiters at Auto Zone. You just pull out the limiter and replace it with annother.

I have a 6200 chip in my 514 and shift at 6000.

I have a 460 SVO engine in my SPF and have talked with the Ford racing boys about your question as to RPM's. They said that the engine is capable of running at 6000rpm all day long and it will nort harm the engine. They actually run that motor in some off-shore boats. He said that every time you take it to 7000rpm, it will half the life of the motor. My feeling is that 6000-6200 is just about right.....Past that you are not building any more horsepower, just making more noise! Don't get me wrong, 6,500rpm sound sweet coming from the sidepipes.

That sounds good. I'm heading to the drag strip this Sunday to see how this novice can do. I'll drop by Auto Zone and buy a 6000 chip to keep myself from messing anything up. Lord knows the oil drips are driving me crazy enough as it is. |
Remember kids, at 6,000 RPM each piston is going up and down 100 times per second! Go easy on those engines, especially on the dyno.

we have a 50,000 mile street 460 that we spray, cast pistions,7200rpm a lot,if u want ur 460 to live forever 6500id say is safe, 6000 the heads r not even working,if u have cj,scj,or truck rods, there go 7500 at a lot of clycles,detanation is what kills this stuff,
