460 ci Ford
Hello;
got a problem with the engine; if I start the engine, you will hear the hydraulic lifters a bit, after a minute or two it is gone, then after a minute or five they gonne produce a sound that I'm thinking that the engine is breaking down! Changing oil 10w-30 to 5w-50, it's a little bit less than before, but still irritating me! What I also can not believe is that it has only 4 liters of motor oil on it, checking the operating guide it should be 5.6 liters (6 US quarts), the dip stick looks new to me, perhaps the wrong one? Allthough I found out that these engines where delivered with different oil pans! Any help is welcome! regards Rob |
You need to give more info on the engine. Is it stock, is it a new rebuild or an old engine with high or unknown mileage? Hydraulic flat tappets or roller?
WIth the info so far, I would say take off the valve covers and check the clearance and look for any loose rockers etc. for starters. Otherwise check out www.460ford.com website. |
I would drain it all out and refill with at least 5 quarts and check to see where it shows up on the dipstick. It's possible the dipstick was intended for a different pan.
How is your oil pressure? Is it steady regardless of noise? |

it's an 1983 with 67,000 miles, I'm not sure but I think it's a roller type. Imported it from the US, big troubles with registration over here, if this was not the case I would have been already rebuilding it! regards Rob |

Yes I really have my doubts about the dip stick, oil pressure is OK, although on the instrument in the dashboard! Checked out some oil pans, think, but not sure, it's a small one! Bought a Haynes manual, it does not give any solution about fluid levels! regards Rob |
the 460 ford usually uses 5qt (US)of oil and 6qt with the F1 filter.
