oil pressure and oil used
Guys,
Just looking for a little insight into what oil most guys are using and what kind of oil pressure you are getting. I have read about zink contents too any opinions. Looking for type, wt, and pressure at idle warm and under different loads. I think I may have a problem and want to compare notes. Mike |
I use royal purple synth'. 10w40. My oil pressure has been pretty consistent at 45 over 2000 rpm and 25 at idle. In the heat of the summer it wants to drop from there so I have put in 20w50 which will bring it back to the numbers above. I never have a problem with the pressure at higher rpms, its always an idle issue.

Mike,
I use Castrol 20W50. Pressure is around 20-40 psi at idle (idle is gloriously lumpy), 55-60 psi at speed, warm. Cold is around 60 psi at all engine speeds. Takes a few minutes to warm up as it has an engine oil cooler. Pressure gauge is mechanical and input is taken from the block rear center tap above the bell housing just behind and below the intake manifold. I understand that the indicated pressure may be a bit higher at the tap on the front left side (facing forward) of the block just above where the mechanical fuel would go if I had one, since it's just on the output gallery of the oil pump, but I haven't checked it there. I use that tap for the ACCUSUMP. I use a "normal" Melling pump. No high volume, no high pressure, no heavy duty. I'm too paranoid about losing another camshaft and distributor. This combo has worked in the 521 for 18K miles just fine. Tom |

If you are running flat tappets you need more zinc in the oil.
I use Rotella. Quote:

Redline 20-50. Pressure between 50 and 60 psi under all conditions.

Since I run a flat tappet cam in an early block I run Shell Rotella T 15W-40. That weight gives me 60 lbs. pressure. That stuff has the extra zinc to properly lubricate the cam and lifters. Usually find it at Pep Boys in the gallon plastic can.

Thanks to all.
My pressure seems a bit lower since I switched to 10W30 Syn. I think I am going to go to something a little thicker. On a side note. I do not have the specs on the CAM (long story). Is there any easy way to tell if it is Flat Tappet with out pulling the whole thing out? Mike |
