What is it now?
 
I have recently installed a new polished intake on my 460. I also changed the oil and installed a new braided oil line to the gauge. The engine was started a couple different times after completion and then shut down. Everything was fine. I start the engine to take the car home and let the engine run for a few minutes to warm up. Everything is fine. I start down the road and about a quarter mile away and I notice the oil pressure fall to zero. I immediately shut down the engine. This engine was custom built by a highly respected builder and only has 400 miles on it. Is there something clogging the oil line to the gauge. I hope. I hope nothing more serious. Any ideas?

Sometimes you have to bleed the air out of the oil pressure lines. I always bump the starter and let oil come out of the line before I hook it up to the back of the gauge.

Pressure is pressure--whether oil or air in the line it'll still indicate the pressure

Awesome, that makes brake work a lot easier now. No bleeding brakes! :D

Just playing...I know what you're saying, but I've had this trouble before. For some reason, after I cranked and cranked and saw no pressure, I pulled the line back off and cranked some more until oil came out of the line then put it back on. Voila.

This is what would be going through my miniaturized, shriveled up brain:

Hmmm. Let's see now. It was working before I installed the new oil line and it's not working now. What has changed? Maybe the new line is pinched or crimped. Maybe it came undone and is spraying oil on the street - or worse yet, all over my engine compartment. Maybe the line or the gauge got some gunk in it - sealer, teflon tape. I better get started looking. Wonder where the tow truck went.

Just musing.

Well, if pressure is pressure, that means that pressure gauges never die?

Oh, I didn't notice that point....I thought it didn't show oil pressure from the get-go.

Uhmm, Warren... DOA, I think, means Dead On ARRIVAL. If I'm wrong (it happens more and more these days), please clear it up for me. :confused:

DEAD, as in kaput. Maybe DOA was not the best term to use. Do you have another pressure gauge that you can hook up? Maybe you DO have oil pressure.

Of course, it could be that the oil pump just crapped out. Check the cheap and easy stuff first .... and that is the gauge.

Go to the auto parts house and buy a cheap oil pressure gauge and hook that up and see if you have pressure then. Then, if that's not working, I would remove a valve cover, start the engine and look for oil pumping out.

START the engine? ....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Remove the coil wire and crank it over to see if oil is circulating. Does the pressure increase on the new gauge installed?

NEVER start an engine when the oil presuure gauge says ZERO.
