One carb or two?
Among many other changes I'm making to my 533BB application I'm pondering the possibility of switching from the Vic Jr. single plane manifold to a dual plane such as the Performer RPM Air Gap to increase low end torque. Right now I'm running a Mighty Demon 850 single carb. I'm wondering why some intakes I've seen here have two carburetors instead of one. I've seen Blue Thunder and some other intakes with two four barrel carb pads. What is the practical difference, advantages or disadvantages? More airflow must be one. I'm most interested in streetability and response under 4000 RPM, won't be racing. Must be some disadvantage or everyone would be running two, no?
Thanks! Dirk |
With the range of carbs available nowadays, there is no performance reason to use two carbs. But some think they look good.

pretty general statement there.....

on a ford small block there are a wide and varied flavors of intakes to choose so the different carbs can be used also on ford big blocks fe's and 460's alike there aren't alot of players in the intake market especially dual planes for the street. if a person was to run a vacuum secondary carb, there are only a few choices and those choices get slimmer based on the motor you have. the combustion engine is a air pump, generally the more air you can stuff through it the better it will perform. that is usable air. if there is no performance reason to run two carbs why would anyone run fuel injection. the bigger air flow shouldn't do anything for performance.
two carbs is worth 5 tenths at the track, period. two carbs are easier to feed than one. you can achieve more hp gain for the street without sacrificing drivability |
I have the Dual Plane Air Gap Intake with a Mighty Demon 850 carb on my 588 - it's plenty - plenty.

.......you just can't tell him much!! Dirk |
heheheh, good one........

Two Fours set up right is incredible, they tend to make the motor a little more thirsty. They sure do look good.I personally rather have a dual plane intake port matched to the heads with a single dblpmp Holley.Makes for very crisp throttle response.
