429 Electric Fans for Stallion Cobra

My electric fans run continously in my 1981 Stallion Cobra. The temperature gauge reads 190 degrees with the fans running. If I switch my thermostat to 180 degrees would it keep the fans from running so much? Has any one had this experience? Is there another way to keep the fans from running continously?

hi dale,
are they the factory fans? there should be a radiator probe that is for the fan thermostat. you can adjust it to have the fans only come on above a certain temp. if the probe and 'stat are gone, you can buy generic ones from summit and wire it in to control the fans.

the thermostat in the intake controls only when coolant will flow to the radiator, not the temp the engine runs at. so the 180 deg thermostat will open and let water flow at 180 degrees and above, if the motor is running at 190 changing to a lower temp thermostat won't change that.

Kellison Stallions run hot with the 429's/460s in them. We have had bad experience with the variable fans switches so I would stay away from them.

You could verify you are / have a proper thermostat in it that works and consider a larger core rad. -- there are lots of things now available that in 1981 were a pipe dream.
