429 Pilot Bushing
OK let me try this. There is an outer bore on a 429 crankshaft that is 1.850 in diameter. There are both pilot bushings and bearings that will fit this counterbore. Both bushings and bearings are a little over .500 thick meaning they will protrude from the back of the crank because the counterbore is about .400 deep. My question is, is there sufficient clearance between the pilot bushing and the spline on the input shaft of a toploader using a bellhousing that is 6.250 deep? Thank you.

While I haven't done a 429 specificly, I have built a few 460 engines. The dimensions you give sound about right, I don't think there will be any interference. If the tranny is used, you can look on the pilot snout and see the marks where the bushing/bearing rides. It typically has a noticeable spave between it and the splines. I adapted a top loader to a flatty several years ago and had to cut a bit of the snout off for clearance in the crank, there was still plenty of room between the bushing and splines..

I just measured my top loader, from the mounting face to the end of the spline ,it was 5 11/32 ". the very end of the crank is one inch away from the bell housing mounting face of my 429 block. which combined dimentions add to 6 11/32, so it sounds like your housing is too short. My housing is 6 1/2 ", then add the thickness of the sandwich plate. My top loader is a wide ratio 2.78 first gear. Iva Bigan |

who's bellhousing?
Went thru 3 Quicktimes before we got one that was right. check the spec. They list it as 6.30" if I remember right and two were short of that. Both from Summit. Go direct to QT they'll exchange it. If that's the case. |
It is a Ford bellhousing, specifically a D7TA 7505. On the DKTT website he specifies that a 6.250 bellhousing must be used. The problem lies with the early 429 crankshafts. I was hoping for an easy answer, looks like I'll have to measure mine and see what I come up with.

From what I'm finding that bell is from a truck... found here- http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/63...sfer-case.html
The only difference I know of with the cranks was different ID's of the pilot bushing bore. Some were 1.375" others were 1.85" same as FE. |
