Perhaps spare parts, never intended to be built into a car by the factory might be a better description? |

A rolling 96" chassis supplied 'as is' by AC Cars of Thames Ditton ca.1969, which remained unbuilt until commisioned by Dr.Kravitz, when a brand new body & structural parts were made, by respected specialists in the field. Attention to detail finding New Old Stock or original spec (MSD excepted!) parts, and a really nice car being the result. The issue of original Cobras having lesser or greater repairs/rebuilds is 'usually' recorded in the registries, and reflects in their values & desireability. :) |
I get the sense that the discussion over exactly what this car is considered to be might have been less pointed had the eBay ad been worded differently. Calling this the one and only MX 1 original AC Cobra is basically a non-starter for many of us.

I think we know what it is, how much is it worth? I know all the answers like"what someone will pay" but if you were asked to appraise the car, what you you say?
|
Anything that is 1 of 1 by definition has no comparable sales by which to assess a value, hence one would have to determine what other cars might be the most similar in characteristics, including date-coded equipment, etc. I'm not sure exactly which cars I would use in that effort.

But is it really one of one?
I think it could be compared fairly realistically to any of the other half-dozen or so Frua`s that have been chopped into 'Cobras'. |
'Tis a bastard is what it is!! Allegedly. I have spoken.....(can we have a new category in the Registry please Uncle Ned?)
OK I have to be pedantic now: you can say that AC were staid, but not 'stayed' (though they stayed in Thames Ditton I'll admit). Sorry Real 1, just a point of order :-) |
Nik - I agree in general, but would have to draw a distinction between a chassis that was given a VIN within a particular series and was also constructed into something other than a Cobra, vs. one that has a unique VIN and was never finished beyond the bare chassis stage. With the former, you are deconstructing in order to rebuild. The closest comparables that come to mind, as has been previously mentioned, are the Paramount chassis, COB/X 6128 - 6132, which were built by AC as stretched bare chassis , but with VIN's in the AC 289 range of cars.
I believe Trevor has most succinctly determined how to refer to the car. :JEKYLHYDE |
just an update
The car sold for $170,000 yesterday.
