Lettering on polished valve covers
What is the best technique for replacing the paint on the embedded lettering on polished valve covers? I tried hitting one with a touch-up pens and now it's really an eyesore!

If you're talking about the polished raised letter and fins style of valve covers, where you only want to paint the "valleys", I shot them with flat black heat paint and used the edge of a credit card to scrape the paint off the fins and lettering. Worked great.

A little lacquer thinner on a rag and wipe clean.

Yup. That's the way. Wrap the rag tightly around a rigid block so you have a flat surface that wont sink down between the letters and fins. Works great.
