A little maintenance goes a long way.
I was detailing my car the other day in preparation for a local car show and decided to clean the air filter while the polish was drying. One of those things I never seem to get around to doing. It's been so long, I had to read the instructions on the K&N cleaner and sticky to even know what to do.
It was pretty nasty. Quite a bit of brown water - all the way around. It's a 14" oval with two inches of height, so it's probably a little restrictive for a stroker even on a good day. The performance improvement was quite noticeable. Really nice. Maybe I won't wait so long to do it again - maybe.

Interesting. K&N says that their air filters will normally require cleaning and re-oiling every 50,000 miles. I doubt I will put that many miles on my Cobra in my lifetime.%/ Roughly how many miles, and how many years, did you have on that filter before you cleaned it?:confused: |

I can appreciate that they say that, but it doesn't make sense. There isn't a whole lot of element and some environments are dustier than others. Why would their filter require so much less maintenance than any other unless it passes the dust into the carb. When I saw the brown water running out of the filter, I felt bad that I'd waited as long as I did - probably no more than 5K miles. Hey, I'm convinced that she runs better and I'm sticking to it!

just did mine with the same results: tons of brown liquid! I dont know how long its been (at least a year as that's how long I've owned it!)

K & Ns can hold a ton of dust but don't let dry spots appear. Rinse from the inside out and reoil evenly. Been using them for 40 years.

Any chance the brown stuff that comes off the filter is just the oil that's on there and it's not really a ton o' dirt? Why wouldn't K&N want you to clean it more often than 50k miles if they're selling the cleaner and oil to do it?:confused:

My K&N has been on my car for 10yrs.
Very low mileage car, but I think I clean the filter anyway.

I exchange my K & N filters every 3 Months, or 5000 klms. That way there is always a clean air filter doing it's job. I do it when I change the oil. Surely it's no bother when you change the oil and oil filter to add one more little task. It's like checking front wheel bearings. Only another five minutes a wheel. Besides, repacking the front wheel bearsings is only a few minutes to check for safety anyway. You want to run harrd? Just do it!
