There are quite a few dyno machines in town, but I think if/when I have mine done I'll go to Lamar and Rob Walden. Although they are more Chevy than Ford, not many people have more hi-po American muscle engine building experience. They're located about 2 miles north of 285 on Buford Hwy.

I called the folks at Ballanced, and they do drill al hole in a header pipe and mount a bung for an O2 sensor. If this is what it takes to get things really right, I'm OK with it.

svobud 05-25-2004 04:31 AM

I've been to Higgin's dyno a few times. The dyno operator knows what he's doing. Kinda freaky because the dyno is an above ground DynoJet - meaning your car gets lifted head high on a lift .. then backed onto the drums and strapped.

I prefer a 'in ground' set up - but it's nothing against Higgins.

Tony - I'm not for sure, but I would think Tommy is more versed in tuning Fuel Injected than Carbs. He's been doing EFI work for me since the late 80s.

I personally wouldn't be ok with the bung addition to my exhaust .. especially seeing how most shops have probes now-a-days that are inserted into the exhaust tip and provide very good wide band O2 readings.

I wouldn't want mine bunged. I think the headers are ceramic coated and welding on that would look like s..t

I just got a call from the guy I sent to BPM and he is pissed. He says that they have been jacking him around for over 5 weeks and throwing parts and money, his, at his car with no results...I have not talked to him about the specifics, but will post when I find out.

Tony Radford 05-25-2004 04:07 PM

That's exactly what I want to hear! Anybody with a Plan B? I wish Barry Grant would offer the services.

Does anyone have any experience with Engineered Performance in Smyrna?

Dave Crace 05-28-2004 05:43 AM

Tony,
That is where I took my car when I had the holley fuel injection. Ed was the owner then and knew what he was doing. Since he is not longer there, who knows. Joel may have had some experience with them since Ed left. I am trying to find someone to tune mine at a dyno in Cumming (RPM?) up near Robinson Racing. This one hooks up directly to the wheels as opposed to a drum set up. My 911 mechanic tuned my 911SC there with good results. I will let you know if I can get something set up.

Thanks Dave. Let me know how it works out. If an alternative solution presents itself between now and the 12th, I'd like to know. Anyone else have an opinion on the folks at Balanced Performance? Isn't carb tuning as easy as it gets for a dyno shop?

Cracker 05-28-2004 12:24 PM

TONY - Don't over analyze this thing. When I was up at BPM I was told ED STILL and only does the tuning up there where the other fella's do pulls. Since my car hasn't been there I can't comment directly on results, however, it really did seem ED new what he was doing. Would JO risk his total build (massive motor) to just anyone? I think not but then again he isn't very bright.

redUnique 05-28-2004 08:38 PM

Tony,

Ok, I was just at BPM today picking up my Supra; they replaced my starter and valve cover gasket. This is the first time I've dealt with them but am satisfied after my only visit. Ed, who formerly owned Engineered Performance in Smyrna, works out of BPM now. I know he is quite knowledgable when it comes to fuel injection, turbos, etc... He may also know American v8s, carbs, and other, but I don't know. I also have had good experience working with Jeff, who bought Engineered Performance from Ed. However, I think for the most part it just comes down to the mechanic actually doing the work.

That being said, as previously stated, I hear that Lamar Walden now has a chassis dyno. Lamar and his son Rob have as good a reputation as anyone in the Atlanta area (that I'm aware of) for building high hp racing and hotrod v8s. They built a really strong 383 stroker Chevy engine that I had in an '84 Vette. Tony, for our carbureted engines, I think Rob Walden would be my choice. BTW, they are located about two miles north of 285 on Buford Hwy.

Hope this is helpful.

Joel, VERY HELPFUL. What is the name of Lamar's shop? I would like to contact him.

Thanks

redUnique 05-29-2004 07:02 PM

Tony,

Contact either Lamar or Rob Walden at 770-449-0315.

Joel, I talked to Lamar and I think I'm going to cancel my appointment at Ballanced and go to these guys instead. Thanks for the lead.

redUnique 06-03-2004 08:17 PM

Tony,

When do you plan on going over? I was going to call them tomorrow to see about taking mine; however, I've been meaning to do this for weeks now. This Saturday a.m. by chance?

Joel

Tony Radford 06-04-2004 03:23 AM

Joel, according to Lamar, they're booked up all next week but will be able to start taking folks week after next. I figured I'd call around the end of next week. A weekend would be great, but I'm not sure if they're open.

redUnique 06-04-2004 07:28 PM

Tony,

I spoke to Rob Walden this afternoon and he mentioned that he's going to be out of town much of next week. I told him I'd give him a call late next week and maybe we could schedule an appointment for next Saturday morning. Maybe we could make it a twin Cobra morning for them. What do ya think?

Joel

Tony Radford 06-05-2004 05:15 AM

Joel, I'd love to. But I've got to deliver a trailer to Knoxville next Saturday so it will make it to Spring Fling. I'm on the books right now at Balanced Performance for a dyno session there on Saturday which I've got to cancel.

Tony Radford 06-12-2004 05:45 PM

Joel, did you ever hook up with Rob or Lamar? I need to get set up pretty soon. I rejetted my carb (richer) and it runs much better, but it is rich.

redUnique 06-12-2004 07:09 PM

Tony,

I intended on calling them this week to see about going over this morning, but of course, I didn't. Hopefully I'll get around to it soon. Let me know if and when you schedule a date.

Joel
