Dynos in the Atlanta Area

Hey-

I have a Unique with a stroked 351W that is running poorly and needs a diagnosis. I saw a thread a while back about dynos in the Atlanta area. Did any of you guys ever find a dyno shop with a knowledgeable operator/mechanic for carb tuning?

Thanks for the help!

Try Lamar Walden Automotive in Doraville, 770-449-0315. These guys have been around forever, originally making a name for themselves with Chevy 409s in the old, old days.

JO and Tony Radford have used someone local and speak highly of them.

If this is a sudden problem, I'd suggest hooking it up to a diagnostic Sun machine first. On my Mustang, we solved 85% of what I thought was a jetting issue via a valve adjustment and ignition tuning. I can recommend someone who has one of these at their house (he does charge for it, but $60 will buy you an hour and he is local to Roswell), before you spend the $$ on dyno time. He is also an absolute carburetion magician and is well known amongst the Shelby Mustang crowd. IMO, dyno time is meant to squeeze out that last few percent. The Sun machine can cut out one cylinder at a time too, which can reveal issues down to a cylinder level. Just my 2 cents.

The problem is a bit of an erratic response when opening the throttle. Sometimes it hesitates and other times it doesn't. The carb was recently rebuilt with all the gaskets and power valve replaced. The accelerator pump was also looked at and seemed to be working fine.

I thought that the dyno might be able to diagnose the problem but maybe the Sun machine is a better solution as this is not a fine tuning type of issue.

What carb are you running? I had similar issues with my Holley and fixed it without a dyno or Sun Machine.

Take it to GeorgiaSnake's house 1st now that he volunteered. :D ;)

That will work, however if you just want to dismantle it go to TC's:LOL:

The carb is a Holley DP 750 pro with mechanical secondarys. GS, what was the solution for your carb?

GeorgiaSnake 02-11-2005 05:42 AM

My secondary is vacuum - that was the problem. I experimented with different springs until I found the right combination. I also experimented with jet sizes.

Looks like the Sun Machine is your answer.

...replace the stator, right Randy? .... %/

....or for the best way to fix a Holley;

step #1: replace with a Barry Grant Demon Carb...
step #2: .... there is no step #2.

You must be feeling better

TC, who's the secret Sun source?

I've just rebuilt my Holley 750 Double Pumper. I bought a Proform main body to replace the stock main body. It doesn't have a choke, but the choke horn is still on the main body, so instead of cutting it off, I just got the new body for $99. I also changed jet sizes (smaller) and accelerator pump shooter sizes (larger). I think I'm also going to put the 50cc accelerator pump diaphragm on the secondaries. Have also bought the Proform billet throttle plate. So basically I've done a Dr. Frankenstein on my carb and now need to see if it "lives!"

Was intending to go back to Balanced Performance in Buford to have it dynoed, but the option of using the Sun plus someone who knows carbs sounds like a better idea. Plus I'd love to see what kind of 'stangs he has. BTW, what do you have? Gowing up, it was my neighbor's 67 Shelby GT 500 that got me hooked on Fords and introduced to Cobras. Can you email or post the contact info?
Thanks!
Scott
