Atlanta area maintenance Backdraft
I purchased a used 2006 Backdraft roadster with a Roush 402IR two months ago. The car has 1500 miles and has been running great. I hadn't started it in about 3 weeks and when I went to crank it up today, the car wouldn't start. It turns over but will not crank up.
Is there a shop in the Atlanta area that someone would recommend? I'm in Duluth. Thanks, Scott |
Fuel pump on?
|
If it isn't the fuel pump switch, like Jay said, check your distributor. Sometimes the the output contacts around the inside of the distributor cap and the tip of the rotor arm get corrosion/wear. Clean them up and see if that helps.

Hey Scoophr.
I'm in Duluth as well. Would love to run into you some time. I take my Cobra out quite a bit, so I'll keep an eye out for you... |
Scott, how are you making out with the problem?
|
Guys:
Haven't checked the distributor yet but here's where I am at: I decided to charge the battery and the next morning the car started. After 3 or 4 starts that morning, the same problem appeared after I turned off it the last time and tried to start--car wouldn't turn over. Sunday morning, decided to try jump starting the car. It worked. Later, replaced the battery and the car started right up. Drove for 30 minutes, returned home, turned it off and then tried to restart. Car wouldn't start again. Decided to try jump starting again, it took a few cranks, was a little rough at first but started. Then repeated jump starting, car started again... Any thoughts? Thanks a bunch in advance. -Scott |
Something??? is draining your battery, It's a 'trace it down' job. If you don't know the procedure, take to an auto electrical shop.
|
Thanks, I'll start digging into that one. For the first two months, everything was fine and I drove it quite a bit...it does seem something in the electrical sytem must have changed
If I do need to have someone look at it, any place that you would recommend? -Scott |
Kinetic Motorsports in Buford have done a number of Cobras. Ask for Russell

I had something similar happen to my Backdraft. In the end it was pretty simple, the alternator was shot. Easy fix.

As you have already discovered, the system is not charging. An IR setup requires more power and will draw the battery down quicker. Don't put anymore batteries in there until you get the system charging itself.
|
Agree and thanks everyone. I'm going to look at the alternator next.
Jay, can you tell me what model Powermaster I would need if it turns out to be the problem? -Scott |
Is the engine polished? Do you have a Tru-Trac system on the front or standard brackets and pulleys?
|
It is a polished engine. I'm not familiar with the Tru-Trac system but it looks like a standard set of brackets and pulleys?? There are two belts.
When driving, I do see 13.5 to 14v on the electrical gauge. I basically will get one to several starts out of a fully charged battery. The car also has an electrical fuel pump and I will notice it not turning on when I've lost charge. Thanks again for thinking about this one. -Scott |
Found a tag on the back side of the alternator, no.17294rr, looks like a 100A Delco style unit, chrome with polished fan.
I just jumped the car and checked the voltage gauge again. 13.5 to 14v when running but when I turned on the headlights, fans and wipers it dropped to under 11v...seems like it is the alternator? If it is, I never knew how quickly it could drain a battery. -Scott |
You can up the alternator to a 140a unit. Powermaster 37293.
What is the second belt running? Just curious? Power Steering? |
Scott: Did your car come from Suncoast in Fl? If so, I know the car. In any case I can probably help. Call me @ 1-941-794-8690
Ted |
Yes, power steering.
