I have spent a long time looking to buy a Cobra and have come across a 1987 AC Cobra with 302 and 5 speed Borg Warner box. AK1201. This particular car has had a ground up restoration, conversion from LHD to RHD and the AC dash has been replaced with an authentic looking 289 Cobra dash and of course is an original aluminium bodied car with original tubular chassis. I've not until now considered the AC however I am starting to take a liking to it. It is a Brian Inglis car which I think holds extra credibility given his reputation and history with Cobra's. The alternative is a new Superformance glass bodied 427 MkIII with a Shelby 427 alloy engine (with 8 stack EFI to meet modern emission stds). Hard to compare as each option offers different benefits. I am however very keen on authenticity and the AC is indeed very original and true to the original car. Also Being an 87 does not need to comply to modern day car registration standards with allows for a much more period correct car. Would love to know your thoughts. How are this AC's appreciated or are they considered the 'poor bastard son' of the king so to speak. Best Regs from Oz |
Yes, they do get the reputation of being the redheaded step son! I am not sure any of those guys drove an AC289 or a MKIV, full disclosure, neither have I. I have talked to more then my fare share of those who have driven and raced them, and read abought many times more who have! The consensus seems to be, if you are not into trying to prove you are macho, and just want a great handlining car with great street manners, but can hold it's own on tight courses, then you are on the right path with the MKIV! It sounds like the one you are looking, is better then new, I don't think you would regret it! Cheers, Dennis

Two different animals.........
My family favorite for daily use MKIV, a stroked SPF is a bit more "pay Attention" One is AC with linneage and hand built, less hp. One is Factory built replica with very high standards, brutally fast. Hmmmm |
Yes, I should have gone into a little more detail! But, I stand by those that have said they are both great cars for drivers. Besides, when is the last time you have seen an AC289 for sale? Cheers, Dennis

Actually it is a 302 version and as you say in excellent condition after what looks to be a ground up resto. at this stage with the lousy AUD.USD exchange that has developed I may well be able to get the AC 'cheaper' than the new Superformance alternative.
See a pic I posted. It used to red/tan but with the resto they painted it Cobra Blue with black interior and changed the dash to a 289 style dash Also are copies of the 2024 MkIV register still available. I would like to buy one? |
From what you have said and what I can see, that would be a Cracker Jack of a car! The 302 is one of the greatest engines that Ford ever made! Cheers, Dennis

Email me for the book separately, what AK# is it? Looks like a great car, one that should be a great driver and long term family memeber. Only other advantage, AC are finite in number, SPF still making them so its again a different plan either way you will enjoy. ;) |
