1986 MKIV Fan Thermostatic Switch in Rad
Hi,
I have had the pleasure of working on a 1986 AC MKIV. I had to replace the fuse and relay for the fan. and found out after the repairs that the fan turns on to early (170F). Hence it will never turn off when driving. Long story short I am looking for a new Thermostatic switch. The p/n that was on the switch is 5802082, but no name on the part. I have alternative ideas to put a switch on the engine, but the owner would like to keep the car original if possible. Any help would be great!!! Chris |
Here is an entire chart, of the type used on VW and other German cars, 22 mm. This is what I'm using myself, mounted in lower tank of radiator. No issues.

Rick thanks for the reply. The Autokraft AC Cobra MKIV I am working on has a sensor with no threads and is held in by a clip and is sealed with grommet type seal in the radiator. It does look like one of the Audi 2-pin sensors with out the threads. The car was built in England, so I am sure the sensor is from a European production car in the early 80's. Thanks again

So I am thinking the fan switch PN # is a 580- 20- 82 (with the 82 being Celsius) and that would be rated at 180F. 20mm core . - - - with that series 580 -- that is a stumper.

I would just use whatever works. Staying with stock doesn't really matter with something kind of hidden anyway, IMHO. I made some not-so-noticable improvements with my AC MKIV which are better than stock and will last longer. |
running hot - help
I am new to this board so please bare with me as I get used to it!! I have a MK IV with lightweight conversion (ak 1171) - problem - runs extremely hot and chokes off fuel when at standstill in warm weather - car has no bonnet scoop and fan working fine (biggest fan available) - and is otherwise completely original...any ideas? I would prefer to keep as original as possible but if necessary I would install air scoop on bonnet if I was sure that would solve the problem - appreciate any suggestions you may have!!!!!!!!!

When AK1185 ran hot, I recored the radiator (was dirty) and installed a 180 degree thermostat. No problems now. The carburator was also replaced/rebuilt. These AC's are getting older now, and items need to be inspected and renewed occasionally.
