B2 Motorsports 400hp 351W, Complete & Ready To Install
In response to the other thread going on about what Cobra buyers would like to see available as a crate-style engine, I've put this package together. This would be a drop-in engine, with all brand new parts (except for the block). No reground crankshafts, no resized rods with press fit pins, etc, etc. Pump gas, no radical cam, but a nice lopey idle; a real sweetheart of an engine.
I welcome all feedback as if this would be something that would be appealing to a new Cobra builder. Included: *Fully machined production 351W block. Bored/honed with torque plates, square decked, fitted with ARP main bolts, align honed, cam bearings/freeze plugs installed, painted to individual's color choice. (Please no hot pink.) *Clevite main/rod bearings *Comp Cams hydraulic roller camshaft *Scat crankshaft *Ford Racing timing set *Ford Racing fuel pump eccentric *ARP cam retainer bolts *ARP camshaft bolt *Scat forged I-beam rods *Probe forged pistons *Hastings moly rings *New timing cover *New timing pointer *Professional Products harmonic balancer *ARP balancer bolt *Stock replacement water pump *Felpro gasket set *Edelbrock Performer RPM cylinder heads *Ford Racing hydraulic roller lifters *Comp Cams lifter spider *Trick Flow pushrods *Comp Cams rocker arms *Edelbrock Performer RPM intake *Melling oil pump/oil pump drive *ARP oil pump/pickup bolts *T-sump oil pan/pickup/dipstick *MSD distributor with polymer distributor gear *Distributor clamp *Carter mechanical fuel pump *Ford Racing valve covers, valve cover breather *Autolite spark plugs *MSD plug wires *PCV valve/hose *Holley 4bbl carb *Low profile air cleaner/filter *March aluminum pulleys and alternator bracket, accessory drive belt *Water neck/thermostat *100A 1-wire alternator *Stainless steel exterior bolt kit *Braided stainless steel fuel pump hose with AN fittings *RAM pilot bearing *CVR gear drive starter included *Rotating assembly balanced *Fully assembled *Motorcraft oil filter *Dyno tested *Build sheet with all specs provided *Build pictures provided *Dyno results and dyno video provided $8499 If someone wanted a little more horsepower, then we can step up to AFR heads for an additional $400. Keep in mind that I'm a former Cobra owner and have been a member of Club Cobra since 2001. I'm very familiar with these cars and the manufacturers and can help make this an easy purchase/install experience. I was told I should be competitive with the Engine Factory. Looks like a similar combo there is $7995, but they're using factory cranks, rods, Petronix instead of MSD, no mention of ARP fasteners, no dyno results, etc. |
Since you asked for feedback...
I don't see how that combo can compete with Ford Racing's new 427W crate engine (M-6007-Z427FFT). For about the same price, its 500hp, Boss 351 block, and H-beam rods. Pete |
When I check that part number, it shows:
*Does not include intake *Does not include distributor By that reasoning, It will also not include: *Carb *Pulleys/Brackets *Coil/Bracket *Starter *Air cleaner *Fuel pump *Wires/Plugs *Alternator *Flywheel Etc, etc. When you add all of that into the package, and also add that my engines are dyno'd and you get build specs/pictures, etc., there's a large difference. I can do a 408 Windsor for not much more than the 351 that would be 500hp. |
I have priced building an engine and let me tell you this, the margins are razor thin and when you throw in warranty repairs, I dont see why anyone would be in the business. It like I was told when I first looked at Cobra's, if you want to build one great you will be doing it for the love of labor, you will save no money as compared to a roller. Same with engines, you want to build one yourself, it will be for pride not because you will save money, in the end you will spend more then if you paid an "expert".

How about the 2011 Corvette??? for an extra amount of money you can go build your own engine--takes about 6 hours,, air fare isn't included.
And it only costs $5,800 extra----- |
Ah Jerry, anyone can put a Chevy engine together.... ;)
|
Brent, what would you recommend if a guy wanted to run a Paxton supercharger and stay in the 500 hp range on a windsor?????
not that i'm going that direction but i may know someone that wants to.... |
Good analysis on the Ford 427W vs Brents motor. My experience has been all those "extra's" (intake, starter, etc. etc.) not only quickly add to the bottom line but are a PITA as well. It's a good call getting a really ready to run engine to drop in, rather than chasing nuts, bolts, washers and an endless variety of "little things" to complete the project.

Bob, there wouldn't be much difference in the parts selection for something like that. I would probably suggest that the customer upgrade to ARP main studs and a forged crank, just in case they got a wild hair and stuck a smaller pulley on the blower down the road.
The pistons would still be forged of course, but they'd have a large dish in them to aim for about 8:1-8.5 SCR. The camshaft would also dictate lobes suited for forced induction. For a carbureted blower setup, I would look for something like a roots blower, so that the carb doesn't have to be blow-through. |
