"The end attachments of the shoulder harness must also be installed at appropriate angles. The ideal position is anywhere between five degrees below and 30 degrees above the driver's shoulder.

If the upper attachment point falls significantly below the driver's shoulder, then a spinal compression injury is likely to occur. In an accident, the shoulder belts pull down and back on the torso as they resist the forward motion of the driver. That is correct, in an accident if the belts are too low you could unnecessarily injure your spine, it is better to mount them to the roll bar.

BOTTOM LINE is unless you have a roll bar, properly installed seat belts AND wear a helmet you run a higher risk of injury.
