In previous post above got me confused. I don't understand if you shreaded your distributor gear, how can you just changed it out on the road without being concerned about the little pieces that may have fell into the motor? I'm puzzled by that statement..... The same thing happened to me and we had to practically rebuild the motor to insure all those little parts were flushed out.. Help me here to understand that? Dex.. |
Never been left stranded, but I would do everything possible to get home and get my own trailer over a tow truck if it happens.

I got stuck a mile from home once when the stud from the Mcleod hydraulic throw-out bearing broke off and jammed between the starter and flywheel gear teeth. Two weeks later, I was in my garage when a washer jammed into the same place. Never did find the nut though, probably because I spaced the bottom of the engine plate away from the bellhousing leaving a 1/4" gap for it to fall out.
Another time I was drivng casually in the country when the engine just plain shut off. The battery cables were tight and the clear fuel filter was full of gas, so it had to be the ignition. I really didn't trust the MSD, even after MSD replaced 3 blown electical components in it for $100+. I mounted a ballast resistor under the coil with a couple jumper wires so I could operate off the points. Engine fired right up, blowing out a little dark smoke from gas that had not been ignited. So far, so good! |

When it happened to mine, the gear was devoid of pin parts, however the shaft still had a piece in it....naturally, as it can't get out. |

I also went without a Debit card for years. Those silly young ladies that work at the bank kept telling me "you can do that at the machine". I kept telling them, "when everyone does it at the machine, some of you won't have jobs anymore". Their eyes glazed over and they tuned me out. But now I go to the bank, and it's only two girls working there. Used to be 5. I'd like to get rid of my Cable TV. Almost $60 a month, and with 70 channels, very little worth watching on TV. And DVDs......more trouble with DVD players. Never had an issue with VHS. Now I just buy the $40 DVD players. They seem to last just as long as the more expensive ones I previously tried. And back to Cobras, simplicity...that's why I like solid lifters and points ignition, and a manual transmission, although I did break down and put in a Pertronix Ignitor instead of the points. |

Once I had a coil fail and waited in 100 degree heat on the side of a hill waiting for a Slideback to show up. One other was when a rubber O ring on a remote adapter had unknowingly slipped out of the groove while being installed. It caused a BIG oil leak and could have caused the loss of an engine.

Yes, in 2000 I was coming home from a show and on a turn the car stalled and would not start.
I got a ride home and went back 2 hours later and the car started. Still do not know why that happened. |

I had a '66 Mustang that had an electric fuel pump on it and whenever it overheated it would vapor-lock.

Lost the clutch, thankfully downshifting to a stop. It was sad to see her pulled up on that flatbed, last time that happened she was just a baby . . . I think I need therapy . . .

Yes, just tonight I got a flat tire. The object entered right at the inside edge of the rear left tire and when it vacated, a starburst now shows through the paint job. It took two cans of fix it plus air from a portable compressor plus four waxed threads jammed into the wound right at the edge. I was wondering when I would replace the T/As so now is a good time. Originally went to the local foothills for an early burger and beer. By the way, as I looked at the inside tire, I came face to face with a local tarantula that was looking for a mate.  Cliff
