Carb ????
After driving the car today for 20 miles or so it started to stall out when I came to a stop. Had to put it in neutral to keep it running. I have a 351w automatic with a Holley 4160 4 bbl. What could be the problem?

Does the car start and run now? I had the same problem a while back and it turned out to be a distributor. the wrist pin let go and the gear was loose, timing was off and car started stalling coming to stops.

The car starts fine. This is something that started today.

I wonder if advancing the timinig would solve the problem of stalling or increase the idle??
|
Will it idle at all if you take your foot off the pedal and put the trans in neutral?
If not, either your timing got retarded somehow, or you might have some debris in one or more of the idle jets. Does the car accellerate OK? If so, not the dizzy or the main jets. |
Hello Pacco,
Kinda cold in Ohio, no? It reached 60 here in central Cal but nice! Did alittle 30 mile run today just to visit. Hope you find your problem. 209 |
Check for a vacuum leak.

Sounds like a float issue. Do a search on Holley floats and you will see many, many threads about the stalling issue with floats. You'll learn all about "whistles" and sight glasses and other things you can try. Your float may be stuck, the needle stuck or various other things. I could never get my Holley to not want to stumble on a hard decel. So I went with Webers!! Best of luck.

I've experienced similar problems from time to time. I actually fouled (gas) out a plug or two on a couple occasions under spirited driving conditions. The fouled plug would rectify itself with mild driving. I think my carb is just too much for the engine. Doug at ERA told me to reduce the jet size in increments of two until I get it right. I also checked and adjusted the float level. My carb is a Holley 750 vacuum secondary. I'm gonna try the jet replacement and see what happens.

When is the last time your points, plugs, and wires were changed? I had an issue with my ERA last year when I first got it, changed out the aged sparkplug wires, points, and plugs and never had a problem after that. While the plug wires looked fine, as soon as I touched them they cracked with age.
