Ohio has dozens upon dozens of replica cobras legally titled as the year they replicate. Replica owners do this because of the same reasons already given in this thread (avoiding emission tests, etc.). This being said, if a car is already titled as a 2008 in Ohio, I do not believe there is any way (legally) they will retitle it as a 1965 model.

jwd, actually I'm one of those people who realize that no matter what year my title says my superformance is I know its not an original, never will be, can't be. I live with it. I don't pretend it is anything else but a two year old car.

No where did I say a car titled as a 65 was trying to be pasted off as an original. My point is, if something is legally titled according to the rules of a particular state, don't be a poor sport because your screwed up state makes up different rules.:rolleyes:

In Ohio years ago you could get away with that. Now the OSP is going back through every title in the State and are cross referencing title to car. Much of the same thing was done in California where the improperly registered cars were impounded and I believe some owners where even arrested. Thusly they in turn came up with the infamous HB SB-100.

The good news is a Bill is going through the House (In Ohio) as we speak, it is intended for 'all' Self Assembled vehicles, Street Rods to Cobras, when and IF it passes and we think it will, then all types of customs will be titled as what they represent, regardless of frame, drivetrain. In simple terms, If it looks like a Duck, IT's A DUCK!

Hopefully passage will come in the Spring of '10. BUT for now it is best to leave well enough alone.

Questions and a very basic answer, 'they' will simply use L.E.A.D.S., (Law Enforcement Automated Data System) The operator tells the computer what the parameters are, I.E.; Every vehicle in OHIO registered as a '34 Ford, '40 Willy's, and of course a '65 Ford.
Then the computer automatically compares all VIN numbers and any not coming back to a matched original OEM car will then be visually inspected.

Since I had retired just as this whole thing was to be implemented I'm sure a lot of it has changed.

I think the big reason in Ohio is the actual license plates. If it is titled as a 65, you can get Historical Vehicle plates. They were $13 for as long as you own the car. I think they are $35 now. Any other year, you have to buy plates every year at about $65. Insurance is an issue also..although not too much.

How can you build a car with a 68 motor and meet 2009 emisions?

That would be really tough. For California you would also have to use BAR approved parts, like the heads, cam, intake, etc. No doubt FI would be your only hope. Cats of course. Combustion chamber shape may also prove to be a problem.

In NJ I am titled as a 66. Low insurance, no renewal fees, no inspection.

I am exempt from emmissions (titled as a 2001). I had to go to my local EPA office and get a permanant waiver. But, the waiver is only good as long as I own it. Next owner has to get the same waiver. So, basically I'm waived from emmisions, but the car isn't. LOL

You're right. The only way to safely pass a smog test would be to install one of those GM E-Rod motors. :eek:

I'll have to check into that. I just buy Collectors Plates. They are emissions exempt.

I also have a set of Historical Vehicle plates from a previous car I owned. Occasionally, when the Collectors plates expire, they find their way onto the Cobra. Never ad an issue.

DV, I do not question what you are saying is true but let me explain my experience with the Ohio DMV. I’ll keep this short as possible…I moved to Ohio from Ky almost 3 yrs ago. In Ky, my 2007 SPF was titled as a 1965 Ford, which was legal with no one being misled in any way. After moving to Ohio, I dutifully went to my local DMV office to get my title and tags. I followed the published procedure but they made it a pain in the ass and after everything was said and done it was to be titled as a 2007 model. Initially, I did not want that (too many horror stories about e-check). I kept my Ky plates for a while (Ky plates draw no attention in Cincinnati). About 6 months ago I decided to bite the bullet and go through the procedure and get the 07 Ohio title. I went back to my local DMV station and told them what I wanted to do. The lady asked me why I did not want the 65 title and historic plates (like my Ky ones). I explained that it was my understanding that was not acceptable. She checked with her supervisor and told me to bring the car down, they would inspect it and if the vin number checked out ok, it would be titled as it was in Ky. And that was what I did. No one was misled and they were told the whole truth. I will add that this was quite the opposite of my previous experiences there. Since then I have talked to numerous people with similar experiences both ways. I am not sure anyone really knows what is going on.

Another question how will the procedure you have described catch the ones who bought a vin plate from a junk yard, put it on his car and registered it. Very illegal trick but it is done.

My Ohio titled car is a 1997 ASVE. The make is ASVE, model CBR and on the comments section it says '67EVERETT-MORRISON.

According to Ohio EPA, at the time I built my car, the car would be emission tested as the registered model year unless you could document the year of the engine. My engine was documented as a 1974 engine and is exempt from emissions testing as it is older than 25 years. I have a permanent exemption card issued to my car that can be passed on to the next owner.(Which will be after I'm dead and gone!) The form you need from Ohio EPA is the Ohio E-Check Engine Verification Form. I got mine from:
