Car Chem - Cobra Sidepipe Silencer Kit? Any Experience?
 

Was curious whether anyone had any experience with this kit:

I know that a lot of people have used the inserts themselves in various ways. I am asking specifically about this particular kit that involves cutting off the sidepipe tips and replacing with the new slip on tips.

I'd really like a solution that does an effective job of quieting things down yet is easily removable if desired. This seems to fit the bill but I am suspicious as I havn't found any references to this kit in the searches I have done and it appears to have been around for a while.

So as mentioned I thought I'd ask to see if anyone had any first hand experience with this particular kit.

I used them to quiet mine down to pass inspection. The ones I bought were installed at the headers. It did quiet the car somewhat, but I still made my own baffles to place in the sidepipes as I had to get below 78 dB. After inspec tion took the baffles out and removed the car chem inserts.

In 2000 I had an older replica that needed complete exhaust from engine out. I had EM construct a set of headers .I sent them my headers and they used them th adjust their jig. They hadn't acounted for the engine offset off center. I had to ship them back with exsplicit instructuio on which side to lengthen and which to shorten and by how much. After all that I felt that the mufflers and turn out tips were too far forward from the rear wheels. I had planned on having everything ceramic coated but knew that if any revisions were needed to be made later I'd have to grind my ceramic coating. So I planed on adding some length to the collecters and make a provision for the Car Chemistry disk units. A bolt in affair and also add some length th the mufflers . Then I found that the Lo-Bak mufflers I had been charged for turned out to be the stock muffler they offered. The Low-baks mufflers came and were hot dog shaped with necked down smaller pipes. I bought a ten foot length of 3 1/2" exhaust pipe added a few inched to the header collecters . I cut the ends off both of sets of mufflers making them 3 1/2" dia. in and out and added lengths of the 3 1/2' pipe material th the ends. I then ordered SS V flange and clamp sets so I could have the ability to connect or disconect the mufflers and turn outs from the header collecters. I made them a bolt in setup for the Car Chemistry disk units and even made a pair of straight pipes that look like the mufflers and finally I had the whole bunch ceramic coated and polished. So now I can change the mufflers add or remove the disk units and turn the turn out elbow pipes up down or what ever.

The Car Chemistry encerts come with a smaller pipe in the center of the disc. They come with several (what would call ) soft plugs that you can cover the center pipe with and play with the size of the hole in that plug. I welded a nut to that disc and made a provision on the outside of the collectors(a heavey washer) so I could bolt the disc in from outside. As I said the connections collector to muffler and muffler to turnout elbow are SS V clamps. When I started the WA DMV code said I couldn't do anything to aplify the noise.= no standard so I thought that sooner or later some one will complain and once welded and ceramic coated it would be really involved to do anything later. Usually you have to show that you have made an effort to reduce the noise

I had them in the merge collector on a 521 BBF. Tested them on engine dyno with and without the CC inserts. The difference was +35hp without them on a 540 hp engine. I dont think they helped reduce the sound enough for the loss of hp, so I did not use them. But reality is that sound reduction = loss of hp to some extent no matter what the solution.

Matt, what do you want to know??? They don't reduce the noise levels very much, & they restrict flow quite a bit. Like sticking a potato in the tailpipe. On a sidepipe exhaust like a Cobra,the only way to reduce noise levels without replacing the muffler sections is to stick an obstruction in the flowpath (& that kills HP). OR, replace the mufflers with mufflers that do a good job of controlling the noise & ones that flow well.
