Time for Paint!!!

Well, it's been a long haul buying and building my Cobra, getting it up and running, getting the SB-100, and now, f-i-n-a-l-l-y, it's time for paint!

I'm towing my Cobra up to Ken Pike's "Street Rod Painter" up in Yuba City this week. Ken had the most reasonable pricing, and he knows Cobras well.

If you look at the streetrodpainter.com site in the gallery, there is a gloss black GTM. That's the color I'm going for, a nice, wet-looking glossy black. Show cut and polished, he said it will take 6-8 weeks.

I'm looking forward to Summer already! :D:D:D

Wah-hoo!

Doug,

Sounds great! Get that baby painted BAB ... that's Bad A$$ Black !

Hray 02-10-2010 11:53 PM

DD: you will not be disappointed, I have seen several of his paint jobs, they are killer and worth the wait.

Bad A$$ Black. I like it.

I breifly contemplated painting is metalic silver last night---for about 3 seconds---then I was back to, "Nah! It's gotta be black!"

Chompin' at the bit!

I love black. Curious...have you ever owned a black car? It takes real dedication to keep it looking fresh and swirl/scratch free.

I love black too and it would be one of my top choices, BUT, I also own a black daily driver and it's WAY too difficult to keep it up, especially after 12 years.

On the other hand, this won't be your daily driver and will be kept in a garage. No paint is good. :)

Looking forward to seeing the finished product. My neighbor down the street with an FFR had his paint sprayed by Street Rod Painter too. Looks very nice.

I went with black because it hides the C5's large azz better.
Will gravitate to a different color when I wear this one out and keep upgrading to the next level (C6). Started with a black C4 several years ago.

You are right...limited use vehicle will be MUCH easier to maintain. Doug, consider buying some Pinnacle Sovereign paste wax (about $85...not cheap!) and it will make your dark cars truly POP. This is what I use on the Cobra, that and a spritz of Zaino #8 for maintenance.

Have they made a Corvette since 1967?

Actually, I like the C4's C5's and C6's, but have never pulled the trigger and actually owned one.

Evan has a black CSX and I remember Jerome's (the prison guard in Sacramento) had a black CSX, both are/were gorgeous.

I had a black BMW when I first got out of college, and then when I sold that I purchased a black Porsche. So, this will be my third black car---so, I know what I'm getting into with a black car.

Thanks for the tip on the polish. I'll check it out.

Cobra safely delivered to Ken's, and a projected finish in about six weeks.

5 coats of black base with 4 coats of clear...how yummy is that?

Cannot wait to see it.

Doug,

Glad to hear the delivery went well. Any challenges with the load / unload process ?

Are you going to paint the fender vents and hood scoop 'vent' ?

It is going to be very cool!

Doug, I too love black cars...always has that quality and authentic look. I used Chrysler met. black on my car and have been very happy with the look. The paint has green and pink highlights and almost looks dark gun metal in bright sunlight.
Good luck, whatever you choose...it will be the right color.

Doug, good choice on your painter, Ken does very nice work.
Nothing looks better than black when done right! Enjoy

Dangerous Doug 02-16-2010 11:30 AM

Scoop and side vents will be unpainted.

The only thing I had to be careful with is that the brake master cylinder box hangs down low enough to hit the trailer if you're not careful---I blocked up the ramp end going up and down the ramp so no issues, but it'd be easy to miss.

I did have to run up the hill "uncorked" and opened it up a bit. This actually attracted the attention of a hot-rodder buddy up the hill, who came down and helped me load it onto the trailer---and he also provided some quick lessons on trailer-backing, which is something I don't do often.

Trip up was uneventful, aside from some local drizzle that subsided once I got out of Silicon Valley. Looking forward to the trip back up to pick her up!
