RM to offer USRRC Shelby 289 Cobra Roadster - CSX 2557

I saw this on Sports Car Digest.

USRRC Shelby 289 Cobra Roadster

"This ex-Shelby Team 289 Cobra Roadster (CSX 2557) will be offered for sale at RM Auctions’ Automobiles of Amelia Island sale to be held March 13, 2010 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Amelia Island, Florida. Its pre-sale estimate is $1,500,000 – $1,900,000."

Somehow I doubt it will go over $500K... This one has more of a heritage than the other 289 cars sold recently but the economy is trashing these sales.

Its a significant car. $500k seems to be where the street cars are at. I would be stunned if a USRRC car went that low. Sure would be a sign of the times.

Yes it would. I was at the Amelia Island auction in 2006 and saw a black 289 competition Cobra sell for $1,500,000. Beautiful car.

The auction was a few months before I bought my Superformance. I remember thinking that if this is what the world is coming to I will never own a Cobra.

This may be one of the Shelbys owned by Houston attorney John O'quinn. Some of his Shelbys sold in Phoenix in January and they brought strong prices.
It will be interesting to see what this brings.

From the SAAC Forum. A quote from Lynn Park about the possible future sale of CSX2521:

"Well, since 2568 sold for $500,000 and 2281 sold for $478,000, I think this car will be somewhere in that $500,000 area. I'll know more in a few weeks."

Thus, I would echo Kris Kincaid's comment(s) from above.

This is a 1.3MM car all day long...........

This car turned out to be a "no sale" at a high bid of $1,275,000 USD on March 13 (Saturday).

Looks like they're gonna try again to sell this car at RM Auctions Monterey, August 12-14, 2010.

It's one of three Cobras (CSX3265 and CSX3275), one Cooper-Ford King Cobra and one Shelby American Can-Am racing car set to cross the block in Monterey this summer.

TButtrick 07-09-2010 11:29 AM

Holy crap! That's a big block in the group 7 car? WOW.
