TKO 600 Question - See Photo

I had a clutch problem and decided to put in a McLoud Kit. I pulled the TKO 600 and found these wear patterns on the snout. It looks like the throw out bearing has been riding on the snout and caused the discoloration and light grooving. The old King Cobra set-up all but disintegrated, so I'm not sure what when on in there in the final days, but it wasn't good.
I'm replacing everything inside the shield except the clutch fork and pivot ball. Should I be concerned with this wear on the snout and replace it while I'm at it. Is there any chance of less than smooth operation of the TOB sliding on this snout? This is a new one for me, so I'm hoping it's no big deal. Thanks, Wayne in Gilroy, CA |
Wayne, it depends on the grooves, usually we replace them.
- are you sure the TO bearing was the right one for the Input shaft bearing retainer >? sometimes we find that people use a 4 speed TOB with a TKO and it rattles and creates grooves. Would be good to meausre out with a caliper and see. -- whilst you are in there a bearing retainer is not a big deal, if you are careful. Steve |

I can't tell for sure from the picture, but it looks like the throwout bearing was spinning on the snout? It should lock to the fork to prevent this. Rodger |

I'll have the fork and bearing out tomorrow with pics. Others might learn how to avoid something here as well.

was there any grease on the input housing??
wrogers55 Wayne there should have been a thin coat of grease on the input housing. This help with sliding or movement of the throughout bearing, and also collect disc power from the clutch and help keep the grease on the housing over time. If you clean up the housing with emery cloth see how bad it is. I don't know the max and min size of the housing output diameter. There is a spec some where. I am sure you can also get the parts to repair this and do it self or have a shop repair it for you. I believe that the housing just slides on and off. Sealing the 2 parts is the important thing. Gasket or 24 hours with a RTV, GRAY. I use a coating of lubraplate, white grease that is water resistant and heat doesn't melt it unless real high temps. I will wait for the out come. Rick L.
