Holley - Bad Run Of Carbs
 

I just wanted to let everyone know that if you bought you Holley carb in the past year sometime, check the finish on it. If you see signs of corrosion or the plating peeling, call Holley Tech Service (270-781-9741), it may be part of a bad run and they will replace it for free. They will need your list number and date code: http://www.holley.com/TechService/ListNumber.asp

Edit 4-8-2010 10:56 EST: I spoke with Holley again and this issue is from 2005-2006, so I guess my carb was "NOS" since it was purchased last year....

I notice that they are now starting to make a lot of all aluminum carbs. A good way to save 5lbs if u need a carb now.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a carb that wasn't all aluminum. Are there iron carbs out there?

die cast "pot" metal, not aluminum or iron.

Ah. Pot metal is often part aluminum or all low-grade (impure) aluminum, so I see where using true machine-grade ally would make a difference.

Pot metal is a zinc alloy,thats why they are so heavy.

*Most* pot metal is zinc alloy. Funny... Barry Grant is making hay with this on their web site. :)

Bad run of carbs
 

I have thought why are these carbs so heavy for years and when a friend put a BG on his cobra I then thought my Pro-systems is quite light.

Aluminium should be just as good as this heavy composition of metals, maybe the zinc in alloy etc made the throttle shaft bearing area last longer!

What do you mean "Run" of bad carbs. -

- I thought it was California gasoline eating things alive !

According to Holley is was a bad run or a bad batch and after that they are okay.

Pusher! Thanks for the heads up on the Holley carb. I just called Holley today and will be sending mine back for replacement with a new 650. I noticed the problem last year and early on in the spring where I was having stalling problems and rough idle. I drained the tank and changed the fuel filter thinking it could have been bad gas. Took the carb to a local guy who is a legend in rebuilding carbs and he thinks highly of the Holley brand. When he removed the fuel bowls he noticed metal flaking. He cleaned it as well as he could. Said he had never seen a carb do that especially a newer one like mine. Told me to watch it for any leaking. This past weeken I noticed the car running rough and wanting to stall. I changed the plug wires thinking that could be the problem. They needed replaced anyway. I started the car up and it ran fine for a short period of time. Later in the evening I thought I would take the car out for a test drive. Well, it would start but stall after a second ot two. Called the carb man and told him about the fuel leaking. He told me to go ahead and buy a new one because he didn't like the looks of the finish flaking off like it was. Ordered the new carb at Advance. Came home and saw your post about a bad run of Holley carbs. Again thanks for posting! It saved me $400!

The base plates are nearly all aliminum and have been. This news is the bodys, bowls and metering blocks. It'd be nice if someone tried a sealed roller bearing in that puppy though.
