Missing/Un-Accounted for Original Cars??

In reading the "Original 427 Engine" thread it got me thinking of a question I have been meaning to ask for a while.

Are there any original Shelby Cobra's (any series) that are unaccounted for in the registry? I.E. - A barn find that is still sitting out there gather dust/weeds (or worse)???

Or is every single car that was built (not counting the mystery cars/frames/bodies that resurfaced in the 80's/90's) accounted for one way or another??

Yes, but not many.

There are only five unaccounted for 427 cars. All six are in my garage. However for the right price, I will sell seven of them. That will only leave me nine to keep.

CSX3327!!!! There, I said it! Death threats will soo=n find the way to my email!!!

The unaccounted for cars have in a couple of cases turned up in a couple of different places at the same time! The registry and guys that monitor these cars are really onto it so there's very few untold stories and missing cars.

Are there really only 5 missing cars out of all that were made?

All chassis numbers are known, but yes, there are still a few actual cars that are listed as "whereabouts unknown:.

People keep beating down barn doors looking for Cobras, Bugattis etc.

Sometimes you travel for 2 hours crawl through hell fro another 2, - and it turns out to be a rusty citroen and an old renault.

There is a good reason the number of cars missing/unaccounted for as well as their chassis number(s) are not well known or openly discussed outside of a few knowledgable people. That helps to keep a lid on instances of fraud of "air", "story" and "duplicate" cars. That is why the Kirkham cars are kept track of as well, to keep a Kirkham from becoming a modern or original "Shelby" at some future date.

So you can ask, but you won't get a straight answer. :)

There are also a very few that the registry has checked as reported stolen or the facts about them are questionable. The stolen ones may never turn up because it would be hard to register them anywhere in the U.S. without the Shelby Club seeing the CSX number.

There are at least a couple of original 427 Cobras for which the serial numbers are unknown because they were intentionally obscured from the frame.

One had a street rod body put on it, but was restored into a Cobra. It got titled with the serial number of a missing car, but that missing car later appeared.

The other was thought to be a long stolen car, but it could not be proven what the serial number was. That one was eventually rebuilt and assigned a Kirkham serial number.
