Any tips for repairing a leather seat on daily driver?

My daily driver is a 1999 Acura 3.2TL with 202K miles. The car still runs great, so I decided to finally replace the broken rear view mirror and replace the carpet floor mats.

The leather interior is in great shape, except for a small area on the seam (3" long with a max gap of 3/16" on the seam) on the vertical side panel on the driver's side seat.

Does anyone have any tips or recommendations about the best way to repair the seam and/or at least prevent it from tearing any more?

Thanks.

Is the leather tearing, or just the thread is broken? If it is the broken thread, you could re-stitch the seam with like-colored thread.

Any local auto upholstery business can give you a good estimate for fixing it.

The leather is tearing and is uneven along the seam (gap varies up to 3/16"). I just took a look at it again and I'm not sure there's enough material to re-stitch it.

No experience with them, but there are lots of kits like these:

Thanks Doug. That's the kind of DIY idea I was looking for.

It looks like the reviews on Amazon are mixed (probably due to user skill...or lack thereof :) )

Contact a reputable New or used car dealer in your area, talk to the used car manager . They have vendors that come to the lots weekly to do minor upholstery repairs, (burns, tears, rips, etc) get the persons phone # and give him a call. These guys can do wonders many times. If they are unable to help maybe you need to have a new insert installed.

I'd try the DIY stuff first and it that doesn't work, pursue Rick's solution. Can't hurt to take a crack at it.
