Screeching master cylinder?

Whenever I jam down hard on the brake pedal, there's a loud screeching sound. It sounds like it's coming from the master cylinder. My car isn't even on the road yet. This happens when I'm just sitting in the garage. I have a lot of pedal and the brakes seem to be functioning properly. Anyone ever hear of a problem like this or have any ideas on how I can figure out what's going on? Thanks...

Mike

Is there any brake fluid in the reservoir?

Does your cat like to sleep around the brake pedal linkage?

Sometimes I'd like to put the cat under the brake pedal :)
To answer your first question, yes... the fluid reservoir is full.

I was reading on some 4x4 forum where a guy had the same screeching master cylinder and he seemed to think that there was still air in the system. Can air in the master cylinder make screeching sounds if you jump on the brakes real hard. If I press the pedal normally there is no screech.

Help!!! Brake experts needed!!!

Is the noise continuous as long as the brake pedal is being pressed?

No it isn't, Bob. It's just a short, loud squeak near the bottom of the pedal stroke.

If you're sure it's coming from the master cylinder, the only thing moving is the piston inside the cylinder. It must be scraping against the side of the cylinder walls. If so, time for a new master cylinder.
