Starter or Solenoid???
I went to start the Cobra and when I pushed the start button, there was a loud clunk, Pushed it again and it started up. Is the starter hanging up or is it the remote solenoid? (Ford 302 with remote solenoid) I had the same problem a few weeks ago, but thought it hung up from being hot. No grinding noises. I am using a McLeod starter with a Lakewood housing. I checked the starter gear alignment with the flywheel when I installed the starter.

Loud clunk indicates the starter solenoid is likely engaging and the problem would be starter related. Most likely the starter drive gear assembly is binding internally in some way.

Do you have a neutral safety switch? Mine caused similar problems.

Come to think of it, I've heard of McCloud bell housings, but didn't know they also made a starter. Do you in fact have a McC STARTER?

Yes, McLeod starter. No neutral start switch.

It sounds like a bad solenoid on the starter. It's pulling the gear in but the contacts to spin the motor aren't doing it. It's also possible that the gear is not going in far enough (jamming on the teeth) which prevents the power getting to the motor.

loose starter wire and \or starter bolts. check switch connections.

It has the Ford remote solenoid on the firewall (ERA). Is there a solenoid on the starter also, or do I need to replace the solenoid on the firewall?

Yes it's that Ford two solenoid set up. You have the solenoid on the firewall switches the heavy current to the starter. That should make a solid click. The starter solenoid engages the pinion in the ring gear by moving it in. That should give a good clunk. Then there is a set of contacts usually connected by the solenoid engaging that spins the motor. If you get a clunk and it's not turning either the switch for the motor isn't being allowed to close or those contacts are burned or loose.

Thanks, I'll pull the starter and check it out.

I floor test rather than bench test with jumper cables as you'll need a foot on it!
