Weight of 428 bare block??
I just sold my 428FE bare block and i need a round about number on the weight of the engine block for freight charges. Im guessing around 300 max just as a bare block.

You got me wondering. So I tore down my engine, try 185 lbs. All kidding aside I just weighed a FE block for you.

Huh, for all the fuss about iron vs alloy blocks, it's less of a differential than i would have thought. I thought it was more like 100lbs.

I was wondering how i could flip it around so easily in the back of my truck.
I didnt think there could really be a 125.00 pound weight savings with an alew-minium block ;) However, that is how i came up with 300 pds. I figured if they weight savings were that much, then the iron block must be near 300 Thanks for going through the trouble of weighing a block for me! So 60 lbs. is all the difference aluminum gets you? I would have thought it was more, but it's good to have a clear answer on it all.

It might have had a big overbore, and maybe a window or two(?):LOL:thus less material to ship.

I was gonna guess 200 #'s, so I was close if it is 185#. I too have a bare block in the garage, I would've weighed it for you, but Ralphy beat me to it!!
I too thought there was more diff than 60 #'s between iron and alum. |

I bought a motor just because, I wanted loose parts for comparison and wanted to weigh anyhow. The motor is a 352 .030 over. So it was no problem here. |

From poking around it seems that the 185 lbs for a 428 is about right. The original cast iron 427 blocks are around 200 lbs. per the Genesis site. The Pond aluminum block is about 120 lbs and the Shelby aluminum block is 125 lbs. Want to lose weight the cheapest way? Aluminum heads, water pump and intake manifold will take off more weight than the change to an aluminum block. (90 lbs less on my scale, resulting in a 520 lb 427). Changing to aluminum block means that, first of all, you need heavier sections to maintain the same stiffness (the basis for a reliable bottom end), plus there are all those sleeves. No miracles here.

Well, I could stand to loose a litte weight myself, the driver. Might the best way to reduce the car's weight overall, save money, be healthier, it's a win/win all around. :)
