Jaguar / Dana 44 LSD drive shafts
Hello to everyone;
Can someone please point me in a direction where I may be able to buy some 30 spline drive shafts to suit a Jaguar / Dana 44 IRS to enable a truetrac or similar locker to be fitted to the rear of my Cobra. I have a series 1 Salisbury Jaguar lsd diff and it has a 19 spline set up and a 3;54 ratio. I only wish to change the spline teeth and diameter/bearings if thats possible. Maybe there is a custom shop that may specialise in a request like this, need some answers in a hurry.......thanks in advance. Chris L Australia |

Sorry fellas, I should mention that these are the Inner drive shafts that exit each side of the diff, not the ones splined in the Hub. I basically need a 30 spline conversion.
Cheers Chris |
My answer still stands. That's where we get our HD stub axles. Give M.W. a call.
I think that the only other source might have been Concours West, but I believe Mike has closed up shop. |
what spline are you running now?
ChrisL Chris CWI used to have a kit for converting over from 27 stub shafts to 30 spline. I have had jeeps my whole life and know that there are 4 different carriers for the Dana 44 housing or Salibury Jag. This is what I did to my rearend to convert to a 30 spline setup. I brought a 30 spline locker for series 2 gears. 307-373 ratio. I got a detroit locker for mine. I have 3.31 gears. The holes in the locker nedded to get enlarged because of the different size bolts for the ring gears. You can drill or mill the holes in the carrier. I got the stub shafts and seals from CWI. cost $900.00 about 12 years ago. Here's the only catch I found, CWI was having the shafts made downunder. The metal was not of correct hardness. CWI ended up going to Mark Williams for there axles. The only thing I will tell you is to add a rear cap support for the carrier caps from LPW. Get a set of 200 wear thread tires and you will not break this rearend. Adding slicks, you are looking at breakage. I have a 600ft pound motor on the rearend that is 12 years old. Have had to replace the seals on the r/s once. No 5 grand hole shots. The rest is easy. Rick L.

30 spline set up
If you are interested in just converting to a locker I have both a Detroit Soft LOCK and a Torsen locker for a Dana 44 with 19 spline stub axles and 3.31 gears. They are both in excellent condition with just test runs on them. I know you are looking to convert to 30 spline but this could be a cheaper alternative. I have 652 LB/Ft of torque and have not twisted a 19 spline stub shaft off yet.
I went back to the stock Salisbury LSD because it worked better than the other lockers I tried. Quote:

Can I ask why you are looking at upgrading to 30 spline axles? Are you drag racing your car or is it a Track build. I notice that a lot of the Guys here in Australia are running 19 spline axles with reasonably high HP. At 1100 or so Kilos in weight you would have to "treating her rough" to break anything. Having said that... have a look here - http://www.reiderracing.com/ Regards Roy P. |
Thanks for the input fellas , have made some enquiries with limited success.
HOWEVER COULD ( BRUCE ? ) COBRA#3170 please contact me at chrisandmelissa17@bigpond.com. I am interested in your detroit soft locker if you wish to unload it. The part number I have here in Australia is 187SL12B for that item. Regards and thanks Chris L |

I was just going to purchase some new 19 spline axles and I broke 1 and the other is twisted to the point of breaking.
Hopefully these are reasonably priced. |

I called this facility and he will not sell axles. He wants you to send your whole center section to him and he will put in new gears, LSD unit, bearing, and the axles. Those axles will probably cost you $2k or more when done. It will be a pretty hefty unit when done if you haven't touched your original assembly. I can have them made for probably $600 each as everything else has already been replaced. |
Thought this was interesting. I had the original axles material tested and rockwell tested today.
Material is: 1215 HRc: 41-44 on surface, tester would not go low enough for inside (case hardened) |

We used a Salisbury in our Corvette when we raced and it was great .... but we had to pay attention to the break away torque and shim it up for every race... the Brake away torque that worked the best was 150# and it was great on Corner entry and smooth transition to power at the apex.... but it required us to go thru it every race so lot's of maintenance.... but it is a much better diff then many know....
