Electric fan wiring.
I've been wanting a Cobra since the sixties. I finally bought a Classic Roadsters 427 SC a few weeks ago. It was supposedly completed in 1991. I love it, but it has a few issues. I had some work done on the distributor and carb. After I got it home I found the fan no longer works as it did before the work was done. It has a thermostat controlled circuit, a manual switch on the dash , and a wire that when attached to the terminal on the fan, makes the fan run all the time. Now it runs all the time, even with a cold engine. Anyone out there have a circuit diagram, or advice? The terminal strip on the left side of the fan has 4 terminals. From top to bottom they are labelled +, G?, M, and C. I'd appreciate any advice.

The fan normally turns on when the fan relay is grounded causing current to flow through the relay to the fan. The ground is usully accomplished by the fan thermostat reaching the desired temp and then grounding, or a manual switch to turn on the fan going to ground.
Did you check to see if when they worked on the car they turned the fan thermostat knob. You can set those down to about 38 deg. I think. So, it would be on even when cold. Other than that check your two grounds one on the fan thermostat and the other that goes to ground from the manual switch. Wayne |

Go to Summit Racing and search on the Painless wiring kit for a fan relay. If you click on that part for more detail, you can pull up the wiring instructions which include a diagram.

Unless Painless has modified it, thier drawing will not show how to wire in a manual override switch for the fan.
I had to modify the circuit diagram for a car I helped wire up recently, as he wanted a manual override for the fan as well. It is a ground activated circuit, which throws a lot of folks off the trail. |
