Has anybody used one of the Keep It Clean one button start switches?

I haven't used the $100 Keep It Clean start button, but I do use the $7 Auto Zone start button. Of course it doesn't light up.

Mine came with a push button start and it is cool. Something different. When the engine is warm, just a quick poke and you are off! I keep thinking about the Back to the Future movie where Doc says; "Roads? Where we are going, we don't need roads!" but that doesn't really relate. Maybe when I get in my Cobra and push that button it makes me feel so good. I feel like I'm time traveling??? How could you expect to time travel with out a button to push? So Maxx, that's why you need a button!

I use a ten dollar Longacre button and I love it. Looks great on the dash too.

And a keyed switch isn't? The inherent simplicity of a momentary push-to-start switch is probably much less likely to fail statistically than the keyed switch if wired properly to the starter contactor and protected by a diode.
Mine will have a push-to-start switch but I haven't paged through the Digikey catalog yet to find the right one. |

I also use one of the lesser switches but you can get virtually the same switch at Pep Boys in their accessory display for $25.00. Lights up and everything!

Thanks for the in put-my question was more alone the lines of the actual function of the switch, it is not clear whether the switch is an ingnition switch and a start button like the type used by Audi or just a start button. It seems like for 100 bucks it would do more than just light up and ingage the starter.

I assume you were wondering if this was a system like on some luxury cars that activates the ignition when you walk up to the car, allowing you to start it by doing nothing more than pressing the start button. There are some aftermarket systems that claim to do that. I saw one that sells for about $400. I don't know if there are less expensive versions.

One customer of mine has the $400.00 ONE.
Another Customer HAD a $400.00 one! We ended tearing it out, nothing but a heartache.
How ever the first customer has had great luck. He has to be within 15' of the car for ANYONE to push the starter button. If he gets out of his car, walks 16' away the car shuts off and will NOT start without a key card!
Not hard to install but technical and you must make sure your measurements are right on. If I remember right there are three individual "Mounted" components.
Now this system has more connections that a regular ignition switch has. You have an ECM and a electronic magnet system mounted in the dash somewhere.
Coolness factor-WORKING ? 100 points!
Non working? Call a wrecker!

I like the fact that my Cobra is simple. The ignition keyswitch failed after one year, so I installed a starter button...even more simple. In my opinion, a $400 electronic button is not what these cars are about.

As far as functionality, my button won't crank the engine if the trans is in gear even if the clutch is in.

That's not a "button" problem. All the button or your key switch does is activate the coil inside the starter contactor to allow the battery to provide power to the starter. One is not superior to the other in this regard.
Have a button or a toggle switch activate your starter is easy to do and easy to wire and I contend, less complicated than a keyed switch. As a security measure I'm pairing my switch up to a remote controlled battery disconnect switch. Switch it off and the car is locked. Switch it on, and the start button works. |

The SPF comes from the factory wired for a transmission neutral switch permissive in the starter circuit. The installer can choose to either connect it to the transmission neutral switch or bypass it. With it bypassed, you're old school.....you can start the car in any gear. ;)

I think I will go with the remote power disconect and a sinple push button switch for the start function. I can post a diagram if any one is interested.
